Look at the pictures before reading and ask your child what they think the story will be about.
Read to your child and have your child read to you. Take turns reading a sentence or a page each.
Encourage your child to point to each word as they read.
Reread your child's favorite books over and over!
When your child has sounded out an unfamiliar word, have him or her reread that sentence. Sometimes, kids lose the meaning of what they've just read when they get stuck on words.
Have your child stop and jot ideas, questions, and new words on post-it notes when reading.
Encourage your child to visualize or make pictures in their head while reading.
Read books to your child on different topics. It will expose your child to new vocabulary words and build their background knowledge.
