It is recommended that items brought in are non-food items like pencils, erasers, tatoos, ect… If you do choose a food item, please be aware, food items are passed out by your child during his/her lunch time. Items should not require utensils.
C
Communication: between home and school is key. Please know that I have your child’s best interest at heart and I will gladly be here to assist in any questions or concerns you may have. I do ask that you come to me first before speaking with the office. I want a positive environment and want to work with you to remedy any problems.
I communicate through class DOJO. Through this site, I will relay important school dates, inform and get volunteers for class parties, and post pictures of events here at school.
I do check my school email, but not always throughout the day. It is best to use Class Dojo. Remember, I am teaching throughout the day and may not always be able to get back to you right away. I always try to get back within 24 hours. If you have dismissal changes, please contact the office at 937-743-8665.
My email: arice@franklincityschools.com

Your child will be earning points each quarter. At designated point increments your child can earn rewards and even brag tags.
The main rule in the classroom is “Do Your Job”. How will that do this? Well, schoolwide we use the acronym GROW.

eating a balanced lunch that will provide him/her with the energy to get through our day. Our afternoon is very long.
Laps: Students making poor choices will walk laps during recess. Remember, this consequence only occurs after warnings have already been given. It is also a school wide consequence. Walking laps is a good way to burn excess energy, but also reinforce good choices need to be made here at school.
M
Money: All money sent to school needs to come in an envelop or baggie labeled with your child’s name and what the money is for. When students turn in loose money, I do not know who it is from or what it is for.
N
Nice:. All students should recognize our school motto “Be the Nice Kid”
O
Overwhelmed: Third grade is a huge transition year. It is the year that requires more independence, responsibility, and faster paced than years before. It will be the first time your child is not learning to read, but rather using what they read. There words per page increases. They are asked to analyze, explain, reason, and justify. This can be very frustrating and overwhelming for them. They may come home upset. It may be the first time many of them struggle some. I promise, it does get better as they get used to this transition.
P
Planners: Starting in third grade, students start using planners. Since I don’t assign homework, sometimes planners are left blank for the day. Students will often write down “missing work” if they need to finish a daily activity. I may write a quick message from time to time, or students will write events that are important.
Please go over the planner nightly. You will then write your signature at the bottom of the current day ONLY.
Q
Quality: Quality of work is key. I want to see what your child knows or doesn’t know, so that I can best meet their academic needs.
R
Reading: Reading at home is important. Even though I don’t give homework, I do encourage families and students to read. We want students to know that reading is fun and can be done outside of school.
S
Snack: There is snack time in third grade. Healthy snacks can be brought it each day. Snacks will be eaten at a time of your child’s choice. They will be eating and working, so please choose snacks that will not create a mess.
Suggested snacks: applesauce pouch, string cheese, crackers, pretzels, carrot sticks, ect….. If your child brings unhealthy food for a snack, he/she will not be allowed to have it. Unhealthy Examples would be chips, candy, and cookies.
T
Testing: Third graders take the MAP assessment 3 times a year. They also take the State Test in reading 2 times a year (fall and spring) and the State math test in the spring.
The state says all third graders need to meet “The Third Grade Guarantee” in order to move onto 4th grade reading. I will give you more information about this at conference time.
U
Unfinished work: Students are expected to complete work to ensure their grades reflect their knowledge and not what they have not completed.
V
Volunteers: Volunteers need to have a background check.
W
Websites: We use many websites. A handout with the various websites will be sent home.
Weather: Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Students do go out during the winter months if temperatures are 32 degrees and above.
