Robert Pershing Wadlow (1918–1940) is remembered worldwide as the tallest man in recorded history, standing 8 feet 11 inches (2.72 meters) tall at the time of his passing.
What many people don’t know is that Bro. Robert Wadlow was a Master Mason of Franklin Masonic Lodge #25 in Alton, Illinois.
In November 1939, at the age of 21, Robert Wadlow was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Franklin Lodge #25 alongside his father, Harold Wadlow.
Because of his extraordinary size, the lodge had a custom Size 25 Masonic ring specially crafted for him — widely believed to be the largest Masonic ring ever made. He wore this ring with great pride.
Franklin Lodge #25 maintains a small permanent display in honor of Bro. Wadlow, including artifacts and photographs from his time as a member.
Bro. Wadlow embodied many of the ideals of Freemasonry — humility, kindness, strength of character, and service to others. Despite his fame and physical challenges, he remained gracious and was known for his gentle nature.
His membership in Franklin Lodge #25 remains one of the most remarkable stories in the history of Illinois Freemasonry and serves as a point of pride for our lodge and the Alton community.
When visiting Franklin Masonic Lodge #25 at 1513 Washington Avenue in Alton, be sure to ask to see the Robert Wadlow display located in the candidates’ room / Tyler’s area. It includes photographs, articles, and replicas honoring our distinguished Brother.
