The primary goal of the center is to remove non-academic barriers to learning as a means to enhance student academic success.
The center offers a unique blend of programs and services determined by the needs of the population being served, available resources, location and other local characteristics.
FRYSCs have established a record of success based on improved student performance in class work, homework and peer relations as reported by teachers. Parents, too, report they experience greater satisfaction and involvement with the schools as a result of assistance through their local FRYSCs.
FRYSC was established in the 20th century when the need for education and human service systems to engage in the joint provision of services and support to children, youth and their families rapidly increased. The growing problems and needs placed a greater demand on public service agencies and demonstrate a need for community and schools to work together to restore family and child well-being.
The Kentucky Family Resource and Youth Service Centers are recognized as the nation's largest school-based family support initiative.
A survey reported that educators, parents, and community partners feel that the Family Resource and Youth Service Centers are a "necessary component of Kentucky educational programming" and a program "vital to students, empowering families, and helping to improve schools".
