Trauma and Resilience

Created by Tiffany Holt

I'm noticing that teachers in my building are not yet able to put student emotions into context, because they are without the skills and understanding necessary to intervene during situations in which a student who has experienced trauma is reacting to a current event, and displaying behavior that is considered “out of control”.

If we take action now, we can begin a plan to gradually help teachers recognize the characteristics of someone who has experienced trauma, and be better equipped to intervene and help these students. My solution is to implement a series of Trauma Informed Care PDs to build capacity in our teachers to not only react appropriately, but be proactive in how they handle these situations; to change their mindset from fear-based to relationship and love-based. I would like to inform all teachers about how toxic stress and trauma impacts the learning environment, and train them in trauma informed practices.
