A message from Becky Bagnall:
I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing volunteers, whose dedication and creativity has been very uplifting.
Volunteers in the FEAS community are participating in a lot of different ways. So far, I've interacted with volunteers who've become "reading buddies" or mentors in classrooms. One volunteer; a retired reading specialist from Grand Rapids, is looking for ways to help to support Amy Torok, the current Title One teacher.
Volunteers are providing staffing for enrichment classes for elementary students on Early Release Wednesdays (ERW). The ERW Program is offered free-of-charge to students from 1:30-3:00 PM.
On the last ERW, K-5 grade students chose between Construction Club, Art, Chess, or Knitting. About 70 students attended the "clubs" on April 10th. There are three remaining ERW's during the 23-24 school year.
Members of the Frankfort Rotary Club were the original architects of the Reading Buddies and Lunch Buddies programs at the elementary/MS levels. This year, second graders have attended mid-day "math club" and "book club", run by Rotarians Mike Tarkington, and Donna Phillips.
FEAS encourages members of the community to volunteer to teach an enrichment class on Early Release Wednesdays. We would like to expand ERW programs to MS/HS. Students surveyed there expressed interest in classes in cooking, archery, film-making, and creative writing, among others.
