The CubeSat program at Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA, is made up of a group of students and faculty who are aiming to reach for the stars. This remarkable program gives students the opportunity to design, build, and launch a real satellite into space as part of their undergraduate education.
The program's first satellite mission, Solar Flare and Ionosphere Explorer (SoFIE), also referred to as SFU-1, is a 3U CubeSat with a mission to investigate the highest layer of the earth's atmosphere (the ionosphere) and measure fluctuations from lightning at the bottom of it and solar flares at the top.
What is a CubeSat?
A CubeSat is a type of nanosatellite composed of between one to twelve units of 10x10x10 centimeter cubes. These satellites provide colleges and universities the opportunity to send a small craft into space through NASA, one that will conduct space exploration decided upon by the school.
