Managing Emotions
Activities
Our schools various mood meters. Your child may be familiar with one here. Feel free to use one of these or make your own. How to use a mood meter:
Emotions are a part of our everyday lives. There are times when we have more intense emotions and have a hard time coping.
It is important that we can:
1.) Name the emotion
2.) Have a coping skill for the emotion
A mood thermometer helps provide a visual for our feelings.
Check in everyday- where are you on the meter? If it is an uncomfortable feeling, what can you do to move to calm?
Parent tip: It is o.k. for your children to know how we are feeling, sometimes it helps them express their own. This is a great tool for you to model your own emotions and how you cope with your own feelings.
Videos
How to use videos to teach emotions and coping skills:
Watch video.
Parent tip: You can do this with any t.v. show or movie.
Have a discussion (pick those that apply)
What emotions did the character have?
How did they handle that feeling?
Do you think that was helpful?
How did that impact that situation?
When have you felt like that?
How has it effected your behavior?
What are ways you can calm down if you are feeling that way?
