FARMINGTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS, FARMINGTON, CT
Dear 1st Grade Parent/Guardian,
We invite you to become a partner in your child’s education. We know that when children see their parents interested in what they are learning in school, they in turn place greater value on their schoolwork.
This Elementary Curriculum Snapshot is intended to provide a broad overview of the expectations, core subjects, and experiences that your child will have as a first grader. You will find an overview of the academic units of study as well as the overarching standards and subject matter taught in Farmington. The Farmington Public Schools has a strong, comprehensive, standards-based curriculum, which aims to develop the skills and knowledge in each academic area and also the transferable skills of the FPS Vision of the Global Citizen.
We want our students to be leaders of their own learning and to explore interests as they grow and develop as resourceful, curious learners. We value your partnership in this process and hope you will make time to attend Open House, conferences and other curriculum-focused celebrations of learning. These events will showcase student work and provide insight into your child’s progress.
We look forward to getting to know you and your children!
Sincerely,
Kimberly Wynne
Assistant Superintendent
Farmington Public Schools- Kindergarten to Grade 4
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
Each elementary school has an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) which helps to enhance and support the school. All parents are an important and valued member of our organization and there are a variety of ways to get involved.
As a PTO, we are committed to supporting the teachers, staff, and administration by sponsoring assemblies and cultural activities, providing support for teacher-led programs throughout the year, honoring our teachers, staff, principals and nurse and administrative professionals on their respective appreciation days, selling spirit wear to the students and community and planning family events. We achieve these goals through fundraising and welcome community support in all forms.
PTO's meet throughout the year and the dates, times, and location are posted in Parent Square. We encourage all parents to get involved. We are always looking for new ideas, committee members and volunteers.
To learn more about opportunities with the PTO or if you have questions, come to the next meeting or reach out to your school's PTO:

Here are some general things you can do at home to support your child's success:
Let your child know that you value their education, their school and their teachers.
Share your child's strengths and weaknesses with their teachers.
Send your child to school every day. Strong attendance is linked to academic performance. Please consult the Farmington Public Schools calendar when planning vacations.

Instructional time is important so late arrivals and early dismissals should be avoided. Parents must walk children inside to sign them in or out.
Make sure your child starts the day with a healthy breakfast. Breakfast is also available at school from 8:30-8:40 AM.
Provide a set time and place for completing homework. Students will have homework every day. They also should be reading every day at home.
Help your child with time management for assignments that are long-term. This is a skill they will need for middle school and beyond.
Talk to your child about what they are learning in school. Ask open-ended questions such as "tell me about...", or "what are you learning in class?"
Attend parent conferences which are held twice a year (November & March). This a great opportunity to ask your child's teacher questions and ways you can support their success.
Demonstrate a positive attitude about the school and teachers. If you have concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher directly.
Monitor your child when using technology. Talk to them about internet safety and social media usage. District issued chromebooks should be used for school related assignments only.
