Identification Process & Student Services

Students are screened for EL eligibility based upon a home language survey given during registration. Students are then given an English proficiency assessment to determine if they qualify for EL instruction. The state of CT requires that students are screened with either the PreLAS (Kindergarten) or the LAS Placement Test.

ELL Services

At the K - 8 grade levels, services are provided one on one or in small groups both in the classroom and outside of the classroom with an English Language Instructional Tutor. At the high school level, students may either enter an ELL instructional class or receive support in their English class through the co-teaching model.

ELL Staff

Each school has at least one ELL tutor who works under the direction of the ELL teacher to support students’ proficiency in English and to help them to understand grade level content. The ELL Teacher and Tutors also work with classroom teachers to help them meet the needs of individual students. There is one dually certified English and ELL teacher at Farmington High School.

All ELL students are required to be tested annually between January - March with the LAS Links test.

In order for students to exit English Learner status and no longer receive English language support, the student must reach the state mandated exit requirements. All identified English Learners in grades K-12 must obtain an overall level of 4 or 5, AND a reading score of 4 or 5, AND a writing score 4 or 5 on the LAS Links assessment in order to exit services.
