Furze Platt Juniors 2025-26 Newsletter
Newsletter 7: 27th March 2026
Newsletter 7: 27th March 2026
It has truly been the busiest, yet shortest, term I have ever known at FPJS! As you will see in our newsletter, our children have enjoyed a wealth of additional events, trips, and activities. It really does feel like a whirlwind of dressing-up days and fun, alongside the hard work of our usual curriculum, of course!
At FPJS, we are incredibly lucky to have such a passionate staff who go above and beyond to engage and excite our pupils. From Year 5 soup-making, Y5 performances this week, World Book Day, TTRS day and a full-scale talent show on Red Nose Day—complete with staff performances—we hope that FPJS is a place your children truly want to come to each day. With that in mind, we have included a report below about our whole school absences- please do read to find out how we are doing currently.
I had the pleasure of taking 56 children to the O2 to perform with the Young Voices choir for the first time. It was such a brilliant experience that we have already signed up to do it again next year! The pride the staff felt for our young performers, who sang their hearts out with such passion, was immense. Read the report for more information about the day!
Today we concluded our spring term with our TT Rock Star day- a short day but nevertheless fantastic way to promote the importance of learning your times tables with speed and to celebrate all of the children who work incredibly hard at learning their times tables with speed! And what a great way to do this dressing up as rock stars! See below for a selection of great costumes from the day!
We truly appreciate your continued support throughout the term and wish all our families a restful spring break. As this is the Year of Reading, we encourage you to find moments to dive into a book with your children—there is nothing quite like the magic of sharing a great story together!"
Anna Clark
Head of School
What a day! The school was transformed into a sea of denim, leather, and neon today as we celebrated TT Rock Stars Day. The energy was electric, and the competitive spirit was even higher. From spiked hair to inflatable guitars, we saw a fabulous array of costumes. It was incredible to see so many children (and staff!) bring their digital avatars to life. Check out the gallery below to see if you can spot your favorite rock persona!
The highlight for many was our high-octane assembly. Not only did we witness intense live TT battles on the big screen, but the whole school also roared through some classic anthems. There’s nothing quite like hundreds of voices singing "Eye of the Tiger" and "Livin’ on a Prayer" to get the blood pumping for some mental arithmetic! Check out the staff and pupils singing here!
The learning didn't stop at the music. The morning was packed with secret tips and tricks to master tricky tables, class battles and a fun TTRS scavenger hunt testing speed and accuracy.
A massive shout-out to Miss Morales for her incredible hard work in organising such a great morning. Thank you to all the staff who leaned into the "rock star" dressing up - as you can see from the photos below.
Mr Wilson and Mr Sawle have been locked in a legendary battle for the top of the TT leaderboard all week. We can officially announce that after a grueling final showdown, Mr. Sawle is our reigning champion! Better luck next time, Mr. Wilson!
What a fantastic way to end our busy term!
Whole school attendance at FPJS currently stands at 95.2% which is slightly below our minimum target of 95.8%.
Our top four classes are:
1st Kingfisher with 98%
2nd Swift with 97.7%
3rd Skylark with 96.6%
4th Heron with 96.2%
A particular well done to Year 4, who have achieved a fabulous 97.4% attendance so far this year.
We are continuing to work hard as a school to improve overall attendance to reach our We know that children are safest and learn best when they are in school; taught by our committed and passionate staff and following our well-planned curriculum.
Research tells us that children with attendance below 90% achieve significantly lower outcomes than their peers. We also recognise that regular attendance plays an important role in supporting children’s social and emotional wellbeing as well as their ability to maintain strong friendships.
We also acknowledge that some children find attending school challenging. If your child’s attendance is below where we would expect it to be, you may have received—or will receive—contact from the school. Please do not view this as criticism. Instead, it is our way of reaching out to work collaboratively with you. We have a wide range of support available in school, and together we can make a real difference in helping your child to attend more regularly and ultimately, improving their academic outcomes and emotional well-being.
Attendance Top Tip:
Please avoid making appointments during school hours where possible.
If an appointment is unavoidable, we ask that it is booked after 1.30pm.
Please also remember, that if you child is late into school (after 9am), this counts as an unauthorised absence for the whole session.
The occasional single day absence every now and again does build up over the weeks. Please follow our guidelines on whether your child is well enough to attend school to ensure that your child is in school every day they can be.

On Wednesday, 25th February, 2026, our school choir embarked on an unforgettable musical journey to the O2 Arena in London. This wasn't just any performance; it was our very first time participating in Young Voices, and what a debut it was!
The scale of the event was truly breath-taking! Our students joined a massive ensemble of 8,700 children, creating a powerhouse of sound that filled the iconic arena.
The day was a true test of stamina as the rehearsals began at 2pm, the concert began at 7pm and we finally arrived back at school at 11.40pm!
Despite being part of such a huge crowd, our choir was impossible to miss! We stood out proudly in the stands wearing our signature sparkly red top hats and enormous FPJS banner which caught the light and showed off our school spirit.
The energy was electric as the children sang their hearts out to a fantastic setlist including a "Wicked" medley, a "Disco" medley and the fabulous "Power in me" which had everyone on their feet. The enthusiasm and vocal power our students displayed were nothing short of inspiring.
While the singing was spectacular, what truly stood out was the impeccable behaviour of our students. It was an incredibly long and demanding day, yet our children remained patient, focused, and respectful throughout the rehearsals and the late-night journey home. They were a credit to the school and to their families.
The children absolutely loved the experience, and the memories of performing on such a world-famous stage will undoubtedly stay with them for a lifetime.
Well done to all our singers—you truly sparkled!
And... the great news is we are planning on doing it all again next year! Year 4 and Year 5 parents watch this space!
Mrs Clark & the fabulous staff team singers (Miss Morales, Mr King, Miss McGillicuddy, Mrs Sweatman, Miss Thomas, Mrs Lovegrove & Mrs Robinson)
What a spectacular way to celebrate the joy of reading! On Friday, 6th March, FPJS was transformed into a living library as we marked World Book Day with a flourish of creativity, storytelling, and some very special guests.
The school was a sea of color and imagination as children arrived in their wonderful costumes. Not to be outdone, the staff joined in the fun with some brilliant creativity based around the beloved characters of Roald Dahl. From Willy-Wonka to Matilda, the effort was incredible!
The day was packed with activities designed to get everyone moving and talking about books:
The Outdoor Book Trail: Every child took part in a brisk, literary adventure around the school grounds.
Sharing Stories with FPIS: It was heartwarming to see our older and younger students connecting. Year 6 headed over to read to EYFS, while Year 2 visited us to share their favorite stories with Year 3.
Author Visits
We were incredibly lucky to host three talented authors over the 2 weeks, each bringing a unique spark to the day:
David Barker captivated Years 5 and 6 with insights into his gripping Pax series.
SJ Poyton made a huge impression (quite literally!) by bringing a giant inflatable woolly mammoth to celebrate the launch of her new book, Mammoth Rider.
Fiona Barker delighted Years 3 and 4 with her charming and wonderful picture books and also taught the children how to draw a whale!
The celebrations wrapped up with a memorable final assembly led by none other than Mrs. Twit (who bore a striking resemblance to Mrs. Clark!). The children were treated to a variety of performances and readings by their teachers, ending the day on a high note of laughter and inspiration.
A huge thank you to all the staff, students, and parents for making World Book Day 2026 such a success. Keep on reading!
What a fantastic day we had raising funds for Comic Relief! The absolute highlight of our fundraising activities was, without a doubt, the annual FPJS Talent Show.
This year, the school was treated to an incredible 23 acts, featuring a brilliant variety of singers, dancers, gymnasts, pianists, comedy acts, and even a magician! Every single act performed with outstanding confidence, and the children should be incredibly proud of their performances. Taking the stage in front of the whole school takes a lot of courage, and they all shined brightly.
Our judging panel—made up of Mr King, Mrs Barry, Mrs Slyfield, and our Headstudents—had a very tough job, but they unanimously agreed on this year's top three:
1st Place: A massive congratulations to Ellie and Isabelle (Y3), who wowed the judges to take the top spot with the first-ever FPJS hoverboard act!
2nd Place: The laughs were non-stop for the brilliant comedy act "If Kids Were Teachers," performed by Benj, Elijah, Ivan, Harrison & Finn (Y6). Their hilarious take on several staff members—including Mr King, Mr Sawle, Miss Gill, and Mr Wallace—had the whole hall in stitches.
3rd Place: Sebbie B (Y5) secured third place for his incredibly confident and highly technical piano performance.
The showcase was wonderfully peppered with "Red Nose jokes" from Mrs Clark between acts, which were met with the traditional, good-natured groans from the children!
To round off the afternoon, the teachers took to the stage for a special guessing game: What year did the teachers start at FPJS? The staff performed dance routines to songs from their starting years, and the winning staff act went to Miss Morales, Mr Sawle, and Mrs Batchelor for their fantastic rendition of "The Greatest Showman".
It was a truly spectacular day for the children, all in aid of a wonderful cause. A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who generously donated to Comic Relief!
You can find all of the performances from the day here!
On Monday 2nd March all of Year 3 were lucky enough to visit the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford as part of our Ancient Egyptians topic. The children were all very excited and had already learned all about the mummification process, the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb by Howard Carter and pharaoh's. The children all took part in a workshop where they were able to hold objects from 3000-5000 years old that were found in Egypt. We saw real life mummy sarcophaguses and took part in a hunt for specific objects located in the museum. The children were all impeccably well behaved and we truly had the most magnificent time. Well done Year 3 - what a wonderful day we had.
Well done to Eagle, Kite and Kestrel classes for their fabulous performances in their class assemblies. They did a great job at showcasing a variety of their learning through the theme of our reading book this term - Kensuke's Kingdom.
It is a real achievement to learn and act out lines in front of a large audience and great preparation for future public speaking and shows.
Thank you to parents also for being a great audience and for supporting your children in learning their lines and delivering them with confidence!
We can detect some budding actors emerging - it will be interesting to see who will be talking on new challenges in the year 6 productions next year!
Last week, our Year 3, 4, and 6 children took part in special road safety workshops led by Al Westley from RBWM. The sessions were brilliantly adapted for each age group to ensure the children got the most out of them. The Year 3 children learned the Green Cross Code: stop, think, look, and listen before crossing the road. They also explored how to identify safe places to cross and discussed why making sensible choices near roads is so important. To make the learning fun, the children took part in a competition where some were proudly crowned Kings and Queens of Road Safety for demonstrating excellent understanding and awareness. Each child was also given a reflective rucksack containing reflective slap bands and an activity book to help them practise their skills at home. The Year 3 team is looking forward to seeing the completed quiz books after Easter, when road safety certificates will be awarded. Well done, Year 3, for taking such an important step towards staying safe!
Year 4 looked at car seat safety and the importance of wearing helmets for riding a bike/scooter and our Year 6 focussed on safe journeys to and from school. Pupils discussed how to plan sensible routes, learned about car stopping distances and driver reaction times and considered how distractions (such as friends and mobile phones) can increase risk when walking near roads. The session reinforced practical ways to stay safe and make responsible travel choices when walking independently to and from school. The children asked some excellent questions and demonstrated a brilliant attitude towards their personal safety. Thank you, Al!
We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of several of our pupils—Maisie T, Isabelle C, Madeline N, Lucy T, Poppy K and Liliana A who recently represented Indigo Gymnastics Club at a prestigious national competition on Sunday, February 22nd.
Competing in front of hundreds of spectators and judges, the girls showcased not only their athletic skill but immense composure and resilience. Their hard work at the gym clearly paid off, with several "podium finishes" to celebrate.
Beyond the medals, the organisers and coaches praised the girls for their maturity and sportsmanship throughout the day. Their dedication to training multiple times a week has truly shone through, and we are thrilled to announce that all four of the girls have qualified for the next level of their competitive journey.
Congratulations, girls! You are wonderful ambassadors for both your club and Furze Platt Junior School.
During the month of Ramadan, the children have shown great respect, curiosity and understanding as they supported one another in taking time out of the school day to complete their prayers. It has been lovely to see their thoughtfulness and maturity, and a strong sense of community and inclusivity as the children explored the values of patience, gratitude in the holy month of Ramadan.
Thank you to Mrs Rashid for supporting our Muslim children during the holy Month of Ramadan
Well done to all our children who are using TT rock stars regularly to practise times tables!
Keep up the daily practise everyone- it is scientifically proven that practising a little and often will ensure you master those times tables as soon as possible until they are automatically recalled from memory.
Here are our Top 10 children for speed in each year group and the best progress for accuracy.
Well done to all our children who are regularly completing their homework tasks to improve their vocabulary! Here are our top 10 children who have spent the most time on their bedrock learning since the previous newsletter.
P.E. has been fantastic this term, with all children showing great effort and enthusiasm in their sports.
Year 5/6 have made excellent progress in developing their skills in rugby and hockey, while Year 3 have shown strong improvement in basketball and OAA.
Looking ahead to Summer Term 1, the children will be focusing on athletics as they prepare for Sports Day. In addition, Years 4, 5, and 6 will be learning cricket, while Year 3 will be developing their skills in tennis.
Have an active spring break, FPJS!
Miss Gill
On Wednesday, 11th March, twelve talented Year 3 students from Wren Class proudly represented Furze Platt Junior School at the Year 2/3 Little Musketeers Fencing Festival.
They rotated through eight different skill stations, where they mastered the essential footwork, blade techniques, and specialized vocabulary of the sport. Once they had the basics down, it was time for the main event!
Dressed in full fencing masks, the children took to the piste for a "King of the Hill" style tournament. In these friendly bouts, the winner remained on the court as the reigning champion, ready to face a new challenger.
It was a brilliant day of sport, strategy, and sportsmanship. Every student showed great enthusiasm for learning a new skill
Well done to all our Little Musketeers!
Miss Gill
On Wednesday, 11th March, 20 students from Kestrel Class headed out to represent Furze Platt Juniors at the Year 4/5 Little Musketeers Fencing Festival.
The day was packed with action as the children moved through eight different activity stations. They didn't just practice their footwork; they also learned the technical vocabulary and essential safety skills required for this historic sport.
The highlight of the event was the "Champion of the Court" matches. Donning their fencing masks, the students faced off against one another in a winner-stays-on format. It was fantastic to see their competitive spirits shine alongside such great sportsmanship.
All the children had a wonderful time mastering a new sport and were fantastic ambassadors for FPJS. Well done, Kestrels!
Miss Gill and Mr Sawle
On Tuesday 17th March, 8 children proudly attended the Panathlon Final, where they competed against schools from across different counties. They took part in a variety of activity stations, earning points for their team which were all added together for a final score.
The team showed fantastic teamwork throughout the event, supporting one another and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship at every stage.
Thanks to their hard work and determination, they achieved an incredible 3rd place overall — an amazing accomplishment!
Well done to everyone involved!
On the 29th February and the 13th of March, all of the children took part in a sporting event as part of our house competitions. The chosen sports were Football, Netball/Netball Skills, Boccia and New Age Kurling. The children did amazingly well and competed in all sports showing all of the school values. The Vikings come out on top after adding together all of the points at the end of the competition. Well done to everyone who got involved!
Mr King
Riverside hosted a friendly competition of New Age Kurling this week. There was lots of tactical play on display, with stones being smashed off the target in an effort to secure the best position!
Across three matches, a custom scoring system combined all points for the final standings:
1st Place: Furze Platt
Joint 2nd Place: Furze Platt & Riverside
3rd Place: Riverside
It was a great experience to meet pupils from another school and compete alongside them in such a competitive environment. Well done to all players!
This term has been short but jam packed and full of fun learning and activities including a trip to the Ashmolean, Egyptian Day dress up and World Book day. We have also been lucky to have not just one, but two author visits.
In English, the children have been looking at the features of a recount and then planned and wrote all about their trip to the Ashmolean museum. The children needed to use time adverbials, past tense verbs and a range of conjunctions. The children have also been creating persuasive posters encouraging everyone to reduce, re-use and recycle- (see some examples in the pictures!)
In maths, we have been learning about fractions. The children have looked at tenths, fractions of an amount and fractions of a number. They have enjoyed using the manipulatives to help with this in class.
In geography our topic is North America. The children looked at where North America is on the map and the different countries located here. We looked at the differences between England and New York.
As part of our science topic, the children have been learning about Animals including Humans. We have looked at the healthy eating plate, how the digestive and circulatory systems work and the bones and muscles inside our bodies.
We also had the most amazing dress up day where we all came to school as Ancient Egyptians. The children completed many activities including writing their own names in heiroglyphics and creating their own cartocuhe.
What an absoultely wonderful term we have had. We hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and we will see you in the Summer term.
Mrs Barry- Y3 Team Leader
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks!:
What are the top and bottom numbers called in a fraction and what do they do?
What does writing in 'chronological' order mean?
Can you name all of the main organs inside the body?
The boy at the back of the class - Onjali Rauf
Earth Shattering Events - Robin Jacobs
Revolting Ryhmes - Roald Dahl
What a busy and exciting half-term the children have had! We have been so impressed by the children's enthusiasm and resilience during their swimming lessons this term. It has been lovely to see how far they have progressed in such an essential life skill.
In English, the children have been writing spooky stories, which they will be sharing with Year 3 children next term. This unit has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to be creative, and they have truly risen to the challenge of spooking the adults (which they have loved!).
In Maths, the children have learned all about fractions of an amount, equivalent fractions, and how to add and subtract mixed numbers. They have also been using a range of manipulatives to support their understanding and to help them visualise these concepts more clearly.
The children have thoroughly enjoyed creating their ‘Save the Rainforests’ badges in our Design and Technology lessons this half-term. By drawing on all of their knowledge from our geography lessons, they have been able to think about why rainforests are so significant and how we can look after them.
They will be applying this learning after the holidays when they write persuasive letters to the Indonesian President to stop deforestation.
In addition, the children loved their Virtual Reality experience, where they were able to see the rainforest and many of the animals that live there up close.
Have a restful break!
Mrs Batchelor
Year 4 Team Leader
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks:
What does the word 'equivalent' mean?
Can you think of a simile to describe a haunted house?
Are you for or against deforestation? Why?
Riddle of the Runes
Janina Ramirez
Football's Greatest Moments
Tom Palmer
Anisha Accidental Detective

What an exceedingly short yet busy term we have had! Our Year 5s have worked so hard and have had many opportunities to learn and grow. From the amazing talent show, super soup-making, and VR headset experiences to three fabulous class assemblies, challenging assessments, and Inter-House competitions—there has not been a boring moment!
Year 5 are becoming more and more secure in Maths, specifically with decimals and fractions. Next term, they will be moving onto percentages and linking these concepts together.
In English, they have produced some fabulous writing—both in their speeches and diary entries—showcasing their ability to adapt for different purposes and audiences. They were persuasive in their speeches and beautifully reflective in their diary entries.
In Science, students have conducted experiments to show how materials can change, while in Geography, they have learned all about volcanoes and earthquakes and the devastating effects these can have on populations living nearby.
In DT, all the children engaged brilliantly with making soup from scratch. They showed great skill and responsibility when chopping, peeling and grating their produce before frying, boiling and blending their soups. They made some impressive culinary creations and evaluated their work like professional chefs—well done!
We hope you have a wonderful and restful Easter break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for the Summer Term.
Miss Scott and Mr Sawle, Year 5 Team Leaders
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks:
Maths: How is 85 percent written as a decimal? How is it written as a fraction? What about 6 %?
Writing: Can you think of any writing tools you could use to make a piece of writing persuasive?
DT: What foods can you think of that are high in protein? Which foods can you think of that are rich in vitamins?

Year 6 have had a brilliant end to the spring term. They have especially enjoyed having choice in their writing units, including creating an encyclopedia about their favourite animal and beginning to design their dream hotel in preparation for writing their own holiday brochures.
In maths, we have been focusing on geometry, position and direction. Pupils have drawn on a wide range of prior learning to solve challenging problems — tricky at times, but enjoyable and very rewarding.
In art, we have been exploring the work of Degas and Giacometti, working towards completing our own modroc statues inspired by their styles.
In geography, we have been learning about supply chains and world trade, discovering how a single item can travel across many countries before reaching the customer.
In science, we have studied the functions of the heart, investigating how blood travels around the body and learning about the different types of blood cells. This has been a fascinating unit that the children have thoroughly enjoyed.
We hope you have a restful Easter break and we can't wait to kick start lots of fun in the summer term... including the Year 6 production and business project!
Miss Morales
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks!:
What are the four components of our blood?
Can you desribe the elements of a supply chain?
What is the difference between the radius, circumference and diameter?
The School Council and Eco Team have been busy making a difference across our school. We recently sold red noses to support Red Nose Day, raising money while having lots of fun along the way. Alongside this, we have been preparing for an exciting new paper recycling project to help reduce waste in our school.
We have also continued our research into healthy snacks by creating a “Sugar Shocker” display. This shows just how much sugar is in some of the snacks we eat at break time. Did you know that a fruit winder contains around 69g of sugar per 100g, while a can of Coca-Cola has about 10.6g of sugar per 100ml? We were very surprised by this!
Because we are so concerned about how these snacks are marketed to children, we have written to our local MP, Joshua Reynolds, to share our findings. We hope to hear back soon and will keep you updated!
