**New** Celebrating Culture, Community, and Future Educators: STEP Spring Cultural Learning Experience
On April 14, 2026, through a contract with the Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council, Foundations, Inc. brought learning to life through a powerful, hands-on cultural experience for students at the Pryor and Hardin School Districts, Montana. The Students-to-Teachers Education Program (STEP) event connected students with community knowledge keepers, cultural leaders, and educators through a series of immersive learning stations designed to deepen understanding of Plains Indian traditions while inspiring the next generation of educators.
Across both districts, students rotated through interactive stations that highlighted the richness and diversity of Crow, Cheyenne, and other Plains cultures. Each session was led by respected Native presenters who shared not only knowledge, but lived experiences, language, and cultural pride.
At Pryor School District, students explored five engaging stations. In the gymnasium, presenters shared the artistry and meaning behind traditional Crow dance regalia, explaining how each piece reflects identity, history, and spiritual significance. Outdoors, students gathered around a Crow-style tipi, learning about its structure, symbolism, and role in both historical and modern life. Inside the school building, traditional games like the shimmy game sparked energy and teamwork, while storytelling sessions offered students the chance to hear and reflect on Crow narratives passed down through generations. The experience was rounded out with an inspiring session on athleticism and education, where students heard firsthand how discipline, culture, and education can shape a successful future.
Students at the Hardin School District experienced seven stations across multiple school sites, where they compared Crow and Cheyenne regalia and tipi styles, gaining insight into both shared and distinct cultural practices. Storytelling sessions incorporated both English and Native languages, reinforcing the importance of language preservation. A standout station on the traditional uses of the buffalo illustrated its central role in sustaining Plains Indian life, touching on food, tools, clothing, and cultural practices. Additional stations, including traditional games, trivia, and an interactive digital experience featuring the Big Metal Game, ensured that learning was both educational and highly engaging.
What made this event especially meaningful was its alignment with STEP’s mission to cultivate future educators by supporting them through culturally responsive practices and community-connected learning. STEP participants had the opportunity to observe and support instruction that honors students’ identities and lived experiences, an essential component of effective teaching. This collaborative effort brought together schools, families, and community partners in a shared commitment to education, cultural preservation, and student engagement. Creating space for students to learn directly from cultural experts enriched students’ understanding and strengthened connections between schools and the communities they serve.
As Foundations, Inc. continues to expand innovative, culturally grounded programming, events like this remind us that some of the most impactful learning happens when students can see, hear, and experience knowledge in authentic and meaningful ways.
