Donation Guidelines

The Santa Ana Public Library accepts donations of material in very good condition. Some items may be added to our collection or passed along to the Friends of the Santa Ana Public Library a support organization-- and sold in used book sales to generate funds for the library.

The Library reserves the right to accept or discard, at its discretion, any donated materials.

Where and when can I donate my books?

Donations are accepted only at the Santa Ana Public Library located at 26 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, during the library open hours. Do not leave donations outside the Library or in the book drop. Library staff is not able to pick up donations from a person’s home or carry boxes into the Library from donor’s vehicles.

Is there a limit on the quantity that can be donated?

Yes, the library will accept no more than four boxes. The Library does not return boxes or receptacles. Please make sure that you bring them in containers that can be left at the Library.

What items are NOT ACCEPTABLE as donations?

  • College textbooks older than two years.
  • Pocket paperbacks older than five years.
  • Magazines and school textbooks.
  • Encyclopedias
  • Audio and video cassettes.
  • Materials with torn pages, excessively worn covers
  • Materials with yellowed, brittle pages or damaged bindings
  • Dirty, dusty items
  • Stained, water damaged, mildewed items

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes. However, by law, library staff cannot determine the value of a donation for IRS purposes. When signed, dated, and stamped, this document will serve as an acknowledgment of your donation.
