Tryouts 2023

Tryouts at the HMS Gymnasium (cuts will be made each day and announced on this website):

Dates:  JULY 15TH-17TH:

INCOMING 6TH GRADERS: 3:30-5:00

INCOMING 7TH GRADERS: 5:00-6:30

INCOMING 8TH GRADERS: 6:30-8:30

* A current KHSAA physical is needed for open gyms and tryouts

* Highlands athletics takes priority over any club sport attendance

Tryout skill expectations:

6th grade skills:

• beginning to demonstrate serving with accuracy using under or overhand from regulation serving line at regulation net height.

• demonstrates forearm passing technique with some accuracy to a target

• demonstrates setting technique with some accuracy to a target

• demonstrates basic hitting and approach technique

• demonstrates some court sense/awareness

• by the end of the 6th grade players should understand some basic player positions and some offensive/defensive strategies

7th grade skills:

• demonstrates a developed overhand serve that goes over the net most of the time

• demonstrates forearm passing with more precision and consistency to a target

• demonstrates setting with more precision and consistency to a target

• demonstrates correct hitting and approach with some consistency

• by the end of the 7th grade players should understands some of the offensive and defensive systems (4-2 and 6-2, base-read-adjust) and player positions

8th grade skills:

• refined overhand serve with more accuracy and consistency

• demonstrates forearm pass with great form/technique/precision to a target most of the time

• demonstrates setting with great form/technique/precision to a target most of the time

• demonstrates hitting and approach with good form/technique and some power most of the time

• by the end of the 8th grade players should understands most of the offensive and defensive systems (4-2 and 6-2, base-read-adjust) and player positions
