At least two (2) times per year, a public school district shall report in writing to the parent or legal guardian, and each teacher of a student in kindergarten through grade eight (K-8), the independent reading level at which the student is reading.
Act 940—Students’ reading levels (grades K-8) will be reported to parents, in writing, twice a year.
The STAR Assessment will be used to note students’ reading levels on the 1st quarter report cards. The Spring NWEA reading score will be used for the 3rd quarter report cards.
The FSPS Grades 6-8 Report Cards will serve as the written documentation for ACT 940 - - Required Report of Reading Level to Parent. All 6-8 teachers can add additional assessments and scores in the comment boxes if needed. Teachers can also print off additional resources to report to parents.
The Lexile level will always be shown as a number with an “L” after it — for example 770L = 770 Lexile. The higher the Lexile measure, the higher the student’s reading level. The reader’s Lexile Framework works in intervals of five with 5L being the lowest. The highest possible measure is 2000L. Anything below 5L is assessed as a BR or Beginning Reader.
*Beginning Reader (BR) is a code given to readers and texts that are below 0L on the Lexile scale. The lower the number following the BR code, the more advanced the reader or text is. The higher the number, the less complex the text is or less skilled the reader is.
NOTE: The NWEA MAP gives the lowest score of a BR400L.
