Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
As we head into the Christmas holidays, I just wanted to take a minute to wish you all well and thank you for the kind words and support given to the school and staff. As you know the last few weeks of the Christmas Term are jam-packed with exciting activities, shows, parties, and visits to the Panto. While this is a lot of fun, providing a variety of unusual and exciting learning opportunities, it is also very tiring for the team. Your continued help and positivity has ensured that we have been able to run activities and support children across the school, so that they can all enjoy these experiences, giving us a needed boost (along with multiple trips to the Costa machine in the shop!).
We have our end of term Christmas Carol Service tomorrow at 10.30am, in the village hall. It would be wonderful if you are able to make it, but if not, we all wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Christmas Show Update
We are all very excited to share our fantastic Christmas Shows with you tomorrow. The children have worked incredibly hard in preparation, so we though it would be useful to share some times with you, so that everything can run as smoothly as possible.

Afternoon Performance
The afternoon performance will start at 13.00, with the Infant performance followed by the Senior’s performance. Timings will be quite tight at the end, so infants will be changed and walked up to school during the Senior’s performance. Seniors will then change out of costumes and walk up to the school, with priority given to children who take the bus. Those not on the bus may arrive back at school slightly after 15.05.
Please note, all children must be collected and taken home from the school, not the hall.
Evening Performance
Children must arrive at the hall at 17.30 for the evening performance. The evening showing will start promptly at 18.00. Infants will start the show and will then change and watch the Senior’s show. Infant children will sit on the floor at the front of the hall and will not be permitted to sit with parents at this time.

Winter Clothing
Just a reminder that children need indoor shoes for school. With the change in weather, our outdoor spaces are wet/muddy and therefore this is taken into our classroom if shoes are not changed. Please check with your child as some shoes no longer fit or have broken.
Also, please ensure your child is dressed for the changeable weather now, with waterproof layers. All children should have a change of clothes in their bag, in case they get wet.

Halloween
With Halloween fast approaching, we thought it would be best to let you know how we would like to approach the wearing of costumes this year for school, Guising, and the disco.
As Halloween falls on Thursday this week (31st Oct), many of you will be taking your children around the houses in their costumes that evening. Due to this, we are requesting that no costumes should be worn to school on Thursday 31st October, so that they are in good condition for Guising. If your child is fortunate enough to have multiple costumes, we would still request that no costume is worn, to make it fair. That way, as parents, you will not have to deal with extra face painting touch-ups, new hair extensions, and duct taping bent pitchforks!
However, on Friday we would love to see their costumes, and all should feel free to wear them to school if they want to. Please note this is not a requirement. For those going to the Halloween Disco at the village hall, this also has the benefit of children not needing to change before heading to the hall for 3.30.
As with previous years, we have two stipulations for costumes in school:
Masks – masks may be worn in the playground, however, they must not be too scary, as this may frighten some of the children. If your child has a mask that is deemed to be too frightening, their teacher will ask them to store it in their bag until the end of the day. In class, all masks will be removed and put to the side.
Weapons/Additional costume items – We request that children do not bring in costume based weapons and additional items. If their costume really needs it for the disco, their teacher will hold on to it for the day and hand it back before they leave. This has the double benefit of them not being broken, as well as them not being used overly aggressively in the playground.

Our Royal Edinburgh Botanics Visit
On Friday 4th of October, Eve from The Royal Edinburgh Botanics came in to teach the whole school about different plants and flowers. She brought a variety of plants for our classes to identify using a key sheet, discussed Arthur Francis George Kerr and gave us virtual reality headsets that let us ‘explore’ the rainforest. Then our classes were then given two diary entries that described different types of rainforests. The class had to guess if they were in the river part or the mossy part of the rainforest using what they could see on the headset. Following that, we headed outside to take part in a playground scavenger hunt where we used bingo sheets to identify things in our environment that are different between here and the rainforests in Thailand. Next, we found some lichen which we closely investigated using a hand magnifier. We drew the lichen's tiny, fine details that you can only see under very close inspection. Finally, we found a flower or plant that interested us, folded it in a paper towel and placed it under some heavy books. When we come back after the holidays our flowers and plants will have dried out and we will be able to collect them together and create our very own class herbarium. We can't wait!

Digital Leader's Assembly
Our group of eight digital leaders, presented their first assembly of the year on Thursday 3rd October. Their theme up until Christmas is Online Relationships, and they spoke with the school about how it feels when different things are said to you, in different ways, and does it change when it happens online?
They did a fantastic job preparing it themselves and seeking audience participation. They are planning on running a second assembly in Term 2 on the same theme, before looking at Digital Health and Wellbeing after the Christmas holidays.

P5-7's Paralympic Triumphs
At school P5-7 took part in our own mini paralympics because it has been our topic for the first term. In our mini paralympics we tried three different sports: goalball, boccia and sitting volleyball. Sitting volleyball was voted as our favourite sport. When you play, you sit on the floor. You have to keep your bum on the floor at all times but can hit the ball with any body part. The aim of the game is to score by hitting the volleyball over the net and have it land on the floor of your opponent's side.
We were very lucky to have two guests come in from Disability Sport, Fiona Green and Paul Davidson as well as our active schools coordinator Murdoch Jamieson. Paul ran the 400 metres race in the London Olympic Stadium in 2012. Paul was competing in a group with the top 7 athletes in the world and Paul came fourth.
Trying these new paralympic sports was a great experience. We enjoyed it so much we asked Murdoch to help us set up a lunch time boccia club after the holidays!

NUT ALLERGY - URGENT INFORMATION
The Food Standards Agency is advising people who have a peanut allergy to avoid consuming foods that contain or may contain mustard, mustard powder or mustard flour because they may have been contaminated with peanuts.
Catering services have consulted our suppliers, Brakes. Although they are not supplied by the company at the centre of this issue, they are taking the extra precaution of checking the products they supply for possible contamination.
Catering services have alerted all our cooks to the products in question and they have been advised to ensure none of these products are used in any items provided to the pupils we have registered with a nut allergy until further notice. Where possible alternative products have been advised.

Weekly Round-up
We are planning on adding a weekly round-up to the website, most weeks. Some weeks may have more information than others, but it's a lovely way for us to catch you up with anything that may have been missed.
Please can we ask that any communication that isn't directly to Mr Sharp, or any of the teachers, is sent to the munlochy.primary@highland.gov.uk email address? This way we will ensure all emails are answered as promptly as possible. Please use this to inform us of any absences, holidays, or appointments, as well as to ask any questions.
We had a fabulous achievement assembly this week. We will try and get a lovely photo of the recipients onto the website next week.

Welcome Back!
Welcome to another year at Munlochy Primary School! We are thrilled to be back and already have lots of exciting plans for the new year. Class teachers will soon be sending out a ‘Welcome to Our Class’, letter with more information about what your child may need, or what their plans are for the term.
In discussion with the class teachers, we have decided to change the school contact procedure very slightly, in the hopes of making it easier for everyone. Absences should still be emailed to the school office or myself, as should anything of serious note. However, if you are keen to pass on some information to class teachers directly, or ask a question, you may use the emails below to do so. Please note however, that class teachers are extremely busy and so may not be able to respond promptly. If you require something urgently, it will still be best to contact myself or the school office via email or phone.
