If you love math and enjoy persevering with challenging problems, you have found your people! Settles Bridge 4th and 5th graders are invited to tryout for Math Team.
The fee for this academic team covers the monthly contest fees, team t-shirt, workbooks, providing a staff sponsor, and weekly meeting practice packets. The fee for the 2025-26 school year is $400.
SBE Math Team requires a year-long commitment which includes: Friday morning practices (6:45-7:35 AM) and (at least 2) Saturday MathLeague competitions. Any online competitions will be held at SBE.

Due to the limited number of spots on the 4th and 5th grade teams, students participate in a tryout process. Tryouts will be held on August 22, 2025 at 6:45 AM. Students will have 30 minutes to answer a 20-question test that is comprised of Math League style questions. The top 10 scorers from 4th and 5th grade will be offered a spot on the team. Register your child here to tryout.
Before accepting the spot on the team, students are asked to consider availability through the season and transportation to school for meetings and will agree to participate in off-site competitions. Click here for our 2025-2026 Calendar of Meeting Dates. There are no make-ups allowed for any contests during the year. More than 2 unexcused absences may result in dismissal from the team.
Our practice schedule will consist of Friday morning meetings before school from 6:45 AM - 7:35 AM. Competitions will be held off-site on Saturdays at local Forsyth County schools. General competition time is from 8:30 AM-1:30 PM.
Students who are successful in Math Team are highly proficient with the four operations of math and familiar with the properties of math (commutative, associative, distributive, identity.) They also have the ability to persevere and solve non-routine problems.
During our team meetings, students review the main problem-solving strategies: Draw a picture or diagram; Make an organized list; Solve a simpler problem; Work backward; Find a pattern; Make a table; Guess, check and revise; Use reasoning (logic). Students will practice identifying which strategy is most efficient for any given problem.
We also review several skills and computation strategies to help apply the problem solving strategies.
Math League
Math League is an optional math contest open to any interested student in grades 3-5 (even if they do not make the SBE Math Team, students may still participate). Contests are held monthly October-March online with at least two in-person events held in Forsyth County during the school year (last year we had 5 competitions). Students who place in a qualifying round are invited to the state level competition held in May. Select students from the state level competition are invited to compete in the National Competition in Texas. Those who place in the National Competition are invited to the International Competition in Bali!
More information and practice materials can be found on the Math League Website HERE.
FCS Pi Fight
Pi Fight is an annual FCS schools contest that is held on a Saturday in May each year. This competition is by invitation only. The top 5 scorers from the MathLeague contests for 4th and 5th grade will represent Settles Bridge at this contest.
Students compete in an individual round and a team round. Awards are given to top scorers for each grade level and each team.
More information and practice materials are provided to students who participate in this competition. Last season's FCS Pi Fight Website here (you must be logged in to FCS Classlink to view).
SBE will once again be a host site for the Math Kangaroo competition. This is open to all SBE students in all grades, even those not on the SBE Math Team. Math Kangaroo USA is a national nonprofit organization with a mission of helping students love math. For over 27 years, Math Kangaroo has organized an annual international mathematical competition for thousands of students in grades K-12. Math Kangaroo's focus is on improving students' math scores and teaching them new strategies for solving word and logic problems, helping them with critical thinking, and gaining confidence in the classroom.
We are excited to host again this year in March 2026 more details to come!
