Junior Math Team is open to 3rd grade students who enjoy math and want to build non-routine problem solving skills. Perseverance when faced with challenges is a great skill to have, and you will definitely get opportunities to build your perseverance stamina!
Junior Math Team meets weekly for an 8 week session. The $55 for Junior Math Team covers weekly meetings, Noetic Challenge Math Online access for the fall session, and contest fees.
Sign up for Jr Math Team will open for the fall session on September 24, 2025. Be on the lookout for information from your student's homeroom teacher.

Junior Math Team is only open to Sawnee 3rd Grade students. Space is limited to 25 students. Spots are filled on a first come, first served basis in addition to a teacher recommendation.

What We do:
Students on Junior Math Team meet weekly afterschool for 8 weeks.
The primary goal of Junior Math Team is to provide an opportunity for interested students to develop non-routine problem solving skills and get exposure to competition math.
During our team meetings, students review the main problem solving strategies: Draw a picture or diagram Make an organized list, Solve a simpler problem, Work backward, Find a pattern, Make a table, Guess, check and revise, Use reasoning (logic). Students will practice identifying which strategy is efficient for any given problem.
We also review several skills and computation strategies to help apply the problem solving strategies.
To wrap up the session, students will participate in the Noetic Learning Math Contest. The Noetic Learning Math Contest is a biannual contest that consists of 20 questions completed in 45 minutes. Students compete individually in this contest and the top scores for the team comprise the team score.
This contest will be completed during the 7th week of the 8 week session.

Any Sawnee 3rd grade student is welcome to participate in Math League competitions. See the Math Team Home page for more information about Math League.
Junior Math Team is open to 3rd grade students. Interest forms and sign up information will be sent home toward the end of August. There are 25 spots available and the spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
Junior Math Team will meet for 8 weeks. There is a session in the fall and another session in the spring. The dates of the sessions are built around the teating window for the Noetic Math Contest. Before signing up for Junior Math Team, students are asked to consider availability for the 8 weekly sessions and transportation home after team meetings. A calendar of meetings dates and the contest date will be provided at the start of the 8 week session. It should be noted that there are no make-ups allowed for the contest at the end of the session.
