In 6th grade, students take 5 academic classes during their school day - Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Academic course levels are determined by a committee of people. These recommendations will be listed on Infinite Campus/Parent Portal later this spring.
What are course recommendations based on?
Motivation and work habits in each content area
Minimal retesting/recovery, classwork and homework completion, participation, quality of work, transfer and application of knowledge, internal motivation, etc.
Overall grade in each content area
Test Scores
Is there a waiver to move my student into Advanced Courses?
There is NOT a waiver process. We will not change your child's course recommendations by parent request.
If my student is not in an advanced class, will they be able to move up before the end of the school year?
If your child's teacher believes that they are ready to be moved into an advanced course, then the teacher will contact the parent/guardian to suggest a move during the school year.
Gifted services in middle school are different from the elementary school Gifted model. Gifted students are served through an academic subject. Gifted students will be recommended for at least one advanced class and up to four. Gifted students will be in an advanced class alongside their non-gifted peers who were also recommended for the advanced class.
