DRAMA

There are several exciting opportunities for students to engage in theater performance at Liberty Middle School! This year, 60 sixth graders performed in two casts of Elf the Musical Jr. These same 6th graders will perform a full-length comedy play this spring. This year, 7th graders have opportunities to perform both in musical and non-musical productions. One class is rehearsing the comedy play, The Mystery Club, and the other 7th grade performance class is rehearsing the musical Moana Jr. for spring performance.
8th grade Liberty drama students are having an especially exciting year! They took their play, Totally Red, to the Forsyth County Schools One Acts Festival. They had a fantastic day showcasing their performance and enjoying the performances from middle schools throughout the county. Superior feedback from the judges and a Best Ensemble Award made it an all around outstanding day for our 8th grade Patriot Players! They are currently sharpening their skills at improv in preparation for Fine Arts Night on February 9th, an evening at the FoCAL center when the public is invited to enjoy Liberty’s Chorus, Band, Drama, and Visual Art students’ work on display. To round out their Liberty drama experience, 8th grade Advanced Drama students will prepare and perform student-directed one-act comedies in May.

CHORUS

The Voices of Liberty continues to grow in size and accomplishments. We have year-long classes for each grade level with concerts at the end of each quarter. Our fall concert showcased some of the traditional music that is usually found in festival lists, and our students did a fantastic job with it.

In 2022, we took a total of 8 students to participate in District Honor Chorus. We had students from each grade level and students in each of the 3 choirs (Sixth grade, Mixed, and Treble.)

Because our students were eager to learn more difficult music, our winter concert featured combinations of the 3 choirs. Each group sang pieces that only their group learned, but we were excited to surround our audience with sound as we joined choirs for bigger pieces.

We had a number of students who auditioned for All-State Chorus. Lydia Smith made it through both sets of rigorous auditions and sang with the Treble chorus in Athens with the best middle school singers in Georgia.

In March, all groups participated in LGPE and represented Liberty well. They showed off their skills in areas such as interpretation, dynamics, accuracy, and overall performance.

We also took a fantastic small group to Universal Studios in partnership with the band during the busy month of March. For our sound workshop there, we learned a piece of music that was recorded at their studios and added to a clip from the movie "The Secret Life of Pets." We also participated in a workshop where our students did voice-overs and sound effects that were part of the clip, too.

Our season wrapped up with the Pops concert in May. Each group of students chose music from the existing music library and from the music catelog to showcase their group's taste and style. In the process they learned that popular music isn't always easier to sing, and they rose to the challenge of singing the music well.

BAND

The Liberty Middle School Band currently provides 200 students the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of music on woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. All three grades are currently preparing for our Large Group Performance Evaluation season in February/March. 7th and 8th grade students are looking forward to their trip to Disney World! Large Ensembles consist of the 6th Grade Band, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band. We also offer small ensembles such as Jazz Band and Pep Band. A note to our rising 6th grade families: on average, 98% of our 6th grade students have never touched their instrument before the beginning of 6th grade band. With a 6th grade roster average of 100 students, that means only two students have played their instrument before! So if you don’t have any experience, that’s OKAY! We will help you find an instrument you will love and excel at and we will teach you everything you need to know.
