Welcome back to another school year here at the LAKE! We are so excited to dive into reading, writing, and learning. 7th Grade ELA has spent the first week of school going over class expectations, getting back into a routine, and learning about our classmates. Students also took our first round of the iReady Inform Diagnostic this week. This diagnostic helps us identify each student’s current strengths and areas where additional support may be needed. The results provide teachers with valuable information that can be used to guide instruction and monitor student growth throughout the school year.

Starting next week, we will officially begin Unit 1: Community and Belonging. Our thematic question is, "How do a community’s shared values create belonging and rejection?" We will spend time reading/analyzing short stories, poems, myths, and our semester 1 novel study The Outsiders by SE Hinton to help students answer this question. We strongly encourage each student to have their own copy of The Outsiders since we will be spending several weeks with it. Your student's ELA teacher has specifics posted on Canvas about this. 

Any homework, test/quiz dates, project timelines, and/or important information will be posted on Canvas. Make sure you and your student take time to look each week about what is upcoming. 

August is all about getting to know one another and building a strong foundation for a successful year of reading! 

Students will set up their reading logs, establish personal reading goals for the quarter, and review the many different genres and types of books available to them. We will also begin our first novel study, Restart by Gordon Korman. Students will read, discuss, and respond to the novel while practicing important reading and thinking skills. If you would like your student to have a personal copy of Restart, please feel free to send one in. 

Standard Math

We are starting the year with Unit 1: The Number System. Throughout this unit, students will work with exponents and order of operations, review and apply operations with integers, perform operations with fractions, and convert between fractions, decimals, and percents. Students will use these skills to strengthen their understanding of rational numbers and prepare for upcoming units.

Advanced Math

Accelerated Math

We are starting the year with a mini review unit on the Number System.  Topics include exponents, order of operations, rational number operations, integer word problems, and an application project.  We will then move into our Equations and Expressions unit to include solving multistep equations and inequalities.  

Upcoming Summative date is September 3rd. 

Our 7th graders are off to a great start as they step into the role of real scientists! Students are learning how to use microscopes, reviewing important lab safety skills, and practicing the habits scientists use every day—asking questions, making observations, collecting evidence, and thinking critically.

Next, we’ll dive into the world of cells! Students will explore cell theory, cell structures and functions, and the characteristics of life as we begin discovering what makes living things…well, alive!

Welcome to 7th Grade Social Studies!  We are so excited for a year filled with learning and fun!  To kick off the year, students are creating personal flags that focus on the 7th Grade ethnic and religious group standards.  It is wonderful learning about our diverse classrooms!  

Towards the end of this week and next week, we are traveling to Southwest Asia.  The students are engaging in activities focusing on the geography of Southwest Asia (SWA) or the Middle East, including political and physical maps, the unique environment, the ethnic groups, and the religious groups of the area. 

Tentative assessment dates are as follows: quiz on the Middle East political map-Tuesday, August 18; quiz on the Middle East physical map-Friday, August 21; quiz on the Middle East environment-Thursday, August 27.  The ethnic group and religious group quiz may be on Wednesday, September 9, and the Southwest Asia Geography Summative will be the third week of September.  

Moreover, at the end of the unit, the learners will create a culminating project for another summative grade.  To prepare for all quizzes and summative assessments, the learners received all answers and background information in their Learning Targets packet.  

Their classroom activities and Learning Targets information are in their binder under their Middle East (SWA) tab, and they are on our Canvas pages if you prefer to look at digital copies.  Thank you all for your support and kindness!  We have had so many families donate candy to our classrooms, and we appreciate your generosity in keeping engagement high!  

Physical Education:

Just a reminder, quarter 1 has started! For any student that has PE for 1st quarter, PE Uniform attire is grey shirt and black bottoms. If you have purchased a shirt, shorts, etc. on School Pay; your child will pick this up in class on one of the first days of the quarter. If your child needs a uniform, it can be purchased on School Pay. Please make sure your child has a grey shirt and black bottoms for the uniform as well as athletic tennis shoes for class every day. 

**If you purchased a PE uniform on School Pay this year, but your child is not in PE this quarter, they will received their PE uniform on the first days of the quarter when they have PE.

Please remind your child to lock up all their valuables in the locker room. Lockers and Locks are available for students to use. 

Leadership:

-We are learning about our different personality types and how to use our strengths in the classroom, social life, and career world!

-We are learning digital literacy hacks that will help students use their resources more efficiently and cooperatively with their peers.

Engineering

In Engineering, the students will be completing three different projects during these nine weeks.  The first individual project is designing a website around a given theme.   The second individual project is creating a specific themed world in Minecraft education.  The third project is working with teams to build a mousetrap car (8th), a paper roller coaster (7th), and a robot (6th).

Lakeside HOSA Membership 2026-2027 Information

Membership Deadline: Friday, September 11

HOSA membership is a multi-step process. Completing the application, submitting the required form(s), or submitting payment alone does NOT complete or guarantee membership. All required steps must be completed by the stated deadline.

Steps to Complete the Lakeside HOSA Membership Process:

1.Attend a Required HOSA Informational Meeting

1. • Attend during Flex on either Friday, August 21 or Friday, August 28 to receive membership information and required forms.

   • Only ONE session is required.

2. Complete and Submit

• The HOSA Membership Application.

3. Complete All Required Parent/Guardian Permission Forms

• All required signatures must be wet signatures signed in ink. Typed, digital, or electronic signatures will NOT be accepted.

4. Return All Completed and Signed Forms to Mrs. Elzey

• Drop off in the HOSA Mailbox outside Room 1310.

5. Complete Membership Payment — $70

• Once all required documents have been received by Mrs. Elzey, payment information will be provided. Payment must be completed by Friday, September 11.

Important Note: All required steps must be completed by Friday, September 11. Incomplete or late membership submissions will NOT be accepted or finalized. No exceptions will be made after the deadline.

Fall Rally Opportunity — Six Flags — October 7

• Students who are officially registered HOSA members by Friday, September 4, will be eligible for the Fall Rally Random Selection.

• Due to limited availability, students who complete all required membership steps by September 4 will be entered into a random selection process for the opportunity to attend. Eligibility for random selection does not guarantee attendance.

General Expectations: HOSA is an active student organization. Members are expected to participate in monthly HOSA meetings, activities, local competitions, and other HOSA opportunities throughout the school year.
