Elijah Trickey (10) participates in the state walk ceremony for the Cross Country team.
Elijah Trickey (10), a sophomore, competed in his first State Meet this fall as a cross country runner. Trickey had run a 18:14 5K last year and this year he ran a 16:17 at regionals to qualify for state.
Trickey had made major improvements from last year and he mentions that it is because he has put in a lot of work and training.
Trickey also made second team all ECC conference and although he was the only individual to go to state he has hopes for next year.
“ [I hope to] get to state again, hopefully as a team,” Trickey (10) said.
Mrs. Lee, the boys cross country coach and teacher at Anderson, has been coaching for many years and believes that Trickey has had a major spike in confidence.
“Him also believing he can do the harder workouts and putting himself out in the front, not only in practice but also in meets,[shows his increase in confidence],” Lee said.
Trickey ran in many races this season, but one stood out as his favorite.
“We had a night race at Bethel Tate and we got to dress up in glowy stuff so that was super fun,” Trickey (10) said.
As Trickey was the only runner from Anderson to compete at state, he needed a strong team to support him. He mentioned what the team aspect is like when competing.
“[My team] cheering me on during the race really helped a lot,” Trickey (10) said.
Mrs. Lee also talks on the aspect of coaching Trickey and how he was able to accomplish his qualification.
“He has got a lot of gifts and then when you put in the hard work and believing in yourself, you could go all the way,” Lee said.
When Trickey competed in state he got 48th out of 215 opponents and ran a 16:27.38. He mentions how he is improving this offseason to be a state contender next year.
“ We are going to be running all winter so we are trying to get 35-40 miles in,” Trickey (10) said.
Although the cross country season has ended, Trickey will be competing in winter track, which is a new addition to Anderson as of last year, and he also runs on the men's track team in the spring.
