Summer cheer camp kids dance along the Anderson cheer team during the Anderson vs Little Miami football game.
The Anderson High School cheer team is better than ever. They’re trying new things, building stronger bonds and becoming more competitive with each season that passes.
In the past few years, the cheer team has added stunting, more tumbling and tightened the requirements for being on varsity. Senior leader Lexy Artis discusses the improvements being made this year by her coach.
“She’s making [the team size] more [like] 11 so it can be a high skill-based team,” Artis (12) said.
These new requirements are strengthening not only the team’s talent but also their connections with one another.
“The bond that the cheerleaders have is really strong,” Artis (12) said.
Another member of the varsity squad, junior Taylor Misiak, had a similar take on the team culture.
“The cheer squad is a really close group of girls and we all are friends, so it’s a nice community to be in,” Misiak (11) said
She continued to shed some more light on ways the girls like to spend time with each other.
“We like to do things before and after games,” Misiak (11) said.
Misiak added that she also enjoys away trips where her and her team create lasting memories on the bus.
“[I love the] bus rides to away games when we play music and we sing,” Misiak (11) said.
Fun moments are what keep the cheerleaders going through all of the hard work and many hours it takes to ensure the football team feels supported throughout a long season.
However, they also have their own competitions to worry about for the girls on the competitive cheer squad. Ella Grote, a freshman competition squad member, elaborates on how the cheerleaders feel about all of the time they spend preparing for sidelines, halftimes and competitions all in one season.
“It’s very busy but you enjoy being there,” Grote (9) said.
The cheer team works incredibly hard during the fall to not only look sharp but also be the backbone of school spirit. Go out and support the cheerleaders at the next home football game when the Anderson Raptors face the Turpin Spartans on October 2nd.
