As an editorial staff, we are made up of a group of sophomores, juniors and seniors. As we head toward our two-week winter break, we wanted to share our thoughts on how to best spend it.
Winter break is a natural invitation to slow down and savor the simple joys that are brought to us. It’s a time to disconnect from social media and reconnect with family and friends. Holiday break is more than just a pause from studies; it’s time to recharge and create lasting memories.
Make sure you take this time to give back to the people you love most. Gifts don’t have to be something big and expensive; it’s more about the thought and purpose behind them. Sometimes gifts don’t have to be tangible items, just acts of kindness. You could unload the dishwasher for your mom before she asks or shovel the driveway for the neighbor who also provides all the baking ingredients your mom forgets to buy at the store. You could visit the nursing home and bring them cookies, or even just spend time with them. Small gestures mean so much more during the holiday season, and they will without a doubt be appreciated.
Although winter break is centered on giving, it’s also important to take time for yourself. This could be by going on a walk or taking a workout class. It could also be as simple as reading a book or baking a new recipe. Taking time for yourself is the greatest reward, especially during the most stressful time of the year.
Nevertheless, you must spend time with loved ones. As the holidays roll around, you might participate in family traditions. Whether it’s decorating the tree, baking holiday treats, or driving to see the lights, all traditions can be a great way to spend time with loved ones. Even if you don’t have a holiday tradition, this year might be the year to influence your family into doing something different, especially if family is in town.
There are many new places locally that you can take family or friends to visit this holiday season. The Cincinnati Zoo Festival of Lights and the Clermont County Light Festival are both great options if you want to look at lights. You could also visit downtown Cincinnati or head to 50 West for some ice skating.
Even if you don’t like getting out of the house and would rather stay indoors, it’s important to keep your mind active and make the most of your break.
