Spring Break is often seen as an opportunity to travel. It’s associated with sunshine, the beach, exploration, and everything summer. However, some may not be able to—or may not wish to—travel over the break, and staying home for a week while everyone else is enjoying new adventures can get boring. Here’s a list of things to do at home and/or locally for those who are staying home-bound throughout Spring Break.
If the weather permits, Cincinnati is home to many free outdoor activities for locals. Anderson specifically has countless trails for those to connect with nature. Such trails include: Woodland Mound, Five Mile Trail, and the Ohio River Trail. Along with the trails, there are parks and playgrounds accompanied by trails, such as Beech Acres, Veterans, Riverside, and Clear Creek, available for leisurely walks. It’s an opportunity to get some sunshine and experience nature.
Another outdoor opportunity is the Findlay Market, located in Over-The-Rhine near downtown Cincinnati. Open every Tuesday-Sunday, visitors are able to shop and buy fresh foods at over 50 local vendors. Occasionally, there’s live music and/or street performers. It is both indoors and outdoors, so even on rainy, groggy days, it’s a good option to visit and get out of the house.
For those seeking low-key activities while still keeping the brain active, consider reading a new book series. Regardless if one is a reader or not, there’s a book series out there for every individual. For non-readers, starting a new TV series is always engaging and keeps the mind busy.
One basic but engaging activity is at home crafts. One current trend is the bedazzlement, where a bunch of shiny beads are bought and then glued onto household objects; this is a time consuming yet rewarding activity. Another is to buy modeling clay from the store, mold it however felt necessary, then paint over with a design of choice. The end result can be used as either decoration or it can be a functional every day object. For a more grateful and thoughtful approach, scrapbooking is always an option.
Those who aren’t necessarily creative or may have a short attention span, cleaning out all unnecessary items in one's room allows for maximum productivity. Not only is it something to do, it also allows for the satisfaction of having a clean and organized room afterwards.
Cincinnati is home to many hands-on experiences. Particularly, the Cincinnati Museum Center offers a vast array of exhibits, each immersing the visitors into a whole new world, ranging from science, to history, to film. Another is the Cincinnati Art Museum, showcasing hundreds of unique pieces of artwork scattered throughout the building.
For individuals who aren’t quite sure what they’re searching for but know they want to get out of the house, Newport on the Levee offers a large selection of activities, as well as food options. There are around ten to fifteen different restaurants, some fancy and some casual, and countless activities, all located on one pavilion. The Levee is home to the Newport Aquarium, a unique indoor golf course called Par 3, an AMC theater, Immersive Gamebox (real-life and interactive games), and classic arcade games.
