The Black Friday that's known today wasn’t always about consumerism. The first time the term ‘Black Friday’ was used was in relation to a financial crisis after the US gold market crashed on September 24, 1869.
Now in 2025, the day is tied to financial prosperity and spending. However, this change did not happen overnight. The shift towards Black Friday becoming a day of economic prosperity occurred in the 1980s. This rebranding comes from financial concepts of red ink, which symbolizes losses, and black ink that symbolizes profits.
Therefore, because businesses experienced massive sales the day after Thanksgiving, their balances were pushed from the ‘red’ to the ‘black’. As stated by Britannica's "Why Is It Called Black Friday" by Don Vaughan, Black Friday is recognized as a day for stores to turn a profit and is celebrated as the largest shopping day in America.
Similarly, over the years, the narrative of Black Friday has changed to adapt to modern technologies. In the 21st century, there's a larger emphasis on online shopping, and to adapt to the changes, businesses have made Black Friday Deals last longer and be available on websites.
According to NBC's The history of Black Friday and experts' 2024 predictions by Zoe Malin, Black Friday competes with Cyber Monday—the first Monday after Thanksgiving, known as an online shopping day—which explains the reason behind longer sales and online availability.
