On Tuesday, November 25, AHS is kicking off Thanksgiving Break with Grandparents Day. Students and their grandparents get to enjoy refreshments, artwork, and a new photobooth in the gym from 9:30am-10:45am. Then, from 10:45am-11:45am, the various musical groups of Anderson, such as the chorus and orchestra, will be performing in Titus Auditorium.
This year, a photobooth will be making its debut. This is a change from last year's professional Lifetouch photos. As students can take a photo with their grandparents and receive it immediately, instead of weeks later.
Mrs. Petsche, a Spanish teacher at Anderson and who is in charge of Grandparents Day, shares her thoughts on the new addition.
“I’m excited for the photo to print right there. I’m hoping that this is a success and we will continue to have a photo booth in the future,” Petsche said.
The returning activities include interactive questionnaires on the tables, breakfast foods, and musical performances. These activities allow students to bond with their grandparents.
Senior, Kenzie Griffin (12), explains her favorite parts of the day.
“I also love how they put on performances, like the choir and the orchestra. I just think that adds a touch to it,” Griffin (12) said.
Grandparents Day takes many people to operate efficiently, more than most would think. Petsche, who has been running the event since 2012, enlists many helpers to make the day run smoothly.
“Mrs. Broxterman helps me by getting together a bunch of artwork to put on display. Mrs. Kincaid [helps as] her cooking classes are the ones that prep all of the food. Mr. Biederman, [Mr.] Gaal, Mrs. Cox, and Mr. Haney are all in charge of the musical performances,” Petsche said.
There are numerous students involved in the planning and execution of Grandparents Day. The cooking students in Mrs. Kincaid’s cooking classes get the food ready and the musical students work hard to prepare for the musical productions. Petsche also recruits students to help set up and clean up everything.
Grandparents Day is a unique day that most high schools do not have. It is a chance for Anderson students to spend much needed time with their grandparents and creates memories that will last a lifetime.
“I feel like Grandparents Day is important to have because [with] us being in high school, I feel like we tend to get really busy and we don’t get to spend as much time with our family, especially our grandparents,” Griffin (12) said.
Grandparents Day also allows the grandparents to have a look into students' school life. They are able to see their grandchildren's classes and understand more about the place they spend a large amount of their time in.
Junior, Sophie Baumgartner (11) shares her feelings on showing her grandparents around Anderson.
“I liked getting to show [my grandma] around and everything because she’s very involved in my life, and my cousins’ and my brother’s life,” Baumgartner (11) said.
