Recently, many movie theaters including AMC, Cinemark and more have been giving fans an opportunity to rewatch their old favorites on the big screen. Whether the movie came out 90 years ago or 10, the chance to see throwback movies is not an experience that’s easily passed up.
Movies that have been brought back—or are in the works to be brought back—include: the Hunger Games series, The Fast and the Furious, Cars, Avengers: Endgame, Gone with the Wind, La La Land, and more.
Theaters show these movies years after their release dates for various reasons. The Hunger Games series is being brought back in preparation for the upcoming Hunger Games movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, which comes out on November 20th. The movie Cars is coming back for its 20th anniversary. No matter the reason, the movies are returning for fans of all ages.
“I wasn’t born when [Fast and Furious] came out, so I wasn’t able to see it in theaters, but it’s such a great movie that I wanted to experience it in the theater," Leah Martin (11), avid Fast and Furious fan, said.
Many peoples’ favorite movies came out years before they were born, or at least when they were too young to enjoy the opportunity to see it on the big screen. Bringing back classic films not only gives people the option to see their favorite movies, but also allows them to take a trip down memory lane.
“For people that were alive when [movies originally] came out, it probably gives them nostalgia [to watch them in theatres again],” Martin (11) said.
When a movie first comes out, people often flock to theaters to give it a try, not knowing whether they will like the movie or not. This is changed when a movie is coming back into theaters for its second time around. Often, only fans of the movie will buy tickets, creating a community within the theater that is rare to find elsewhere.
“You’re in a room [full] of a bunch of other people that actually want to see the movie,” Blake Lewis (12), Marvel fan, said.
There is a lot of sentimental value in watching a movie together with people who share love for it. Not only that, but theatres are much more immersive and intense than watching movies at home. The sounds are louder, the screen is bigger and everything is set up for an ideal viewing experience.
“Seeing [a movie] in my living room is cool, but it’s not the same as watching something in a theater,” Lewis (12) said.
Watching in theaters can also be an opportunity for people to connect socially or hangout outside of their own house. Going to a theater can become a night out with friends, an experience that is elevated when you are watching a movie that is close to the heart.
“A theater is a physical space [where] going somewhere that isn’t just your home feels nice,” Martin (11) said.
Whether you are 15 and seeing a movie for the first time or 35 and seeing it for the hundredth, experiencing something at a theater is an unforgettable experience.
“It’s cool to see [old movies] in theater again,” Lilly Lauer (10), Hunger Games fanatic, said.
