Mason City Scrimmage
Charles City
Top: Muren Sharp & Claire Weaver led the girls. Bottom: Medalists—Silas Gann (3) & Grant Gayther (5) for the boys.
What a night! Both teams battled tough hills and warm weather to bring home HUGE wins—Boys over #2 Denver & #16 Jesup, Girls over #8 Denver, #19 Jesup & #3 Hudson. A gritty start to the season—our athletes SHOWED UP and COMPETED!
Okoboji
The night was a great success, especially considering our athletes raced on tired legs from Tuesday’s practice. Our teams stepped up, competed hard, and came away with impressive results against some of the state’s top-ranked programs.
Team Results
Girls Varsity: 3rd place, finishing behind Sioux Center (#4, 3A) and MOC-Floyd Valley (#9, 3A).
Boys Varsity: 3rd place, just behind Sioux Center (#9, 3A) and Storm Lake (#11, 3A). The boys defeated several ranked opponents, including MOC-Floyd Valley (#13, 3A), Spirit Lake (#9, 2A), Okoboji (#11, 2A), Mediapolis (#12, 2A), Lake Mills (#1, 1A), and Sioux Central (#5, 1A).
Boys JV: 5th place overall, running a steady race and competing well against tough competition.
Girls JV: Faced the heaviest downpour of the night, yet the “Fab Four” pushed through the storm with incredible determination — and every one of them came away with a personal record!
This year, coaches are adding a new recognition: Place Records. While PRs are important, racing is also about competing and moving up in the standings. A place record means finishing in a better position than last season, even if the time isn’t a personal best. This highlights the importance of racing strategy, passing other runners, and contributing to the team score.
Gilbert
Despite racing in warm conditions at the start of the meet, our teams competed with grit and determination against some of the best competition in the state. The challenging weather didn’t stop our athletes from pushing hard and posting some of their best efforts of the season.
On the girls’ side, several athletes achieved personal records, including Ashlee Aukes, Aubrey Kluver, Emie Thompson, Evonna Johnson, Kate Klaassen, Samantha Clouse, and Sophia Reese. Shelby Keough set a meet record, while Ashlee Aukes, Samantha Clouse, Shelby Keough, and Sophia Reese earned place records. Both the varsity and JV teams finished 10th overall. Notably, the girls’ varsity top five runners finished within just 21 seconds of one another—our best pack performance of the meet. The girls team was forecasted to place 13th place with 303 points but finished 10th place with 264 points!?!
For the boys, the progress was equally impressive. Brantley Schmidt, Creighton Wirth, Grant Gayther, Liam Weissenfluh, Max Dewhurst, Sasha Hully, Silas Gann, and Wyatt Bertram all set personal records. Cameron Jacobs added a meet record, while Cameron Jacobs, Dirk Zeman, and Wyatt Bertram secured place records. Varsity boys finished 7th overall, while the JV team placed 9th. The boys’ varsity top five runners had a spread of 55 seconds, the second-best pack of the meet.
Even with sickness circulating through the team and the added challenge of warm racing conditions, our runners showed toughness and determination, resulting in a wave of personal bests and competitive finishes. This meet was a great test of depth and resilience, and we are proud of how both teams responded.
