Forest child started out 10 years ago doing parties and holiday clubs and over the years we have branched out to work with projects across Bristol, Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Across all these projects we have watched children and parents grow connecting with nature and escaping the city.
I can tailor the Forest School activities to your current curriculum or lines of inquiry. Sessions can also be planned around children's interests as I believe passionately in a child led approach to learning.
During sessions this summer and Autumn we covered topics as diverse as tree identification, making Christmas decorations, animal track hunts, hibernation, mini beasts, woodland animals, orienteering and woodland crafts.
All sessions start with warm up games and boundary setting. Activities are then provided so that the children can get to know and learn about their woodland environment.
Health and Safety
All activities are Risk Assessed by a fully qualified Forest School Leader. Children's Health and Safety are of paramount importance and all activities will be adequately staffed and discussed with the children to ensure the relevant boundaries are set.
I have an enhanced CRB disclosure and a current Paediatric First Aid Certificate.
We will always carry a complete First Aid kit and have an Accident and Emergency procedure for each site we visit.
How often should we run it?
To get the most out of Forest School a block of weekly sessions lasting a term is recommended but equally a one off day is a great introduction to this enchanting approach to learning.
Where can we run it?
Forest School can be done on school grounds, in a nearby green area or we have sites we can use in and around Bristol.
Here's a selection of some of the types of activities we do:
Orienteering
Woodland Crafts
Cooking
Charcoal Making
Mini beast hunts
Animal Tracking
Conservation
Scavenger Hunts
Making Musical Instruments
Games
Bug Hotels
Jewellery Making
Planting
Den Making
Rope Swings
As a qualified teacher I can cover PPA time in schools or indeed take a class out to Leigh Woods for a stimulating fun day of Forest School activities. All sessions are Risk Assessed and linked into the EYPS or National Curriculum. I run Forest School in all weathers as shelters can be constructed, hot drinks are provided and lots of games will be organised to keep warm!
Forest Child' is run by Yvette McLoughlin, a qualified primary school teacher and experienced forest school leader who runs sessions for early years, community groups, womens groups, nursery schools and charities.
