Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) is an innovative approach to positive youth and community development grounded in social justice principles. In YPAR, young people are trained to design and conduct systematic research that helps improve their lives, their communities, and the institutions meant to support them. YPAR is valuable for any young person who wants to make a difference, and it is especially powerful for youth who experience marginalization due to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, ableism, or other forms of oppression. Through the 3D Lab and Fordham's Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL), we organize annual year-long partnerships with multiple local high schools in the Bronx. Together, we work with student co-investigators to critically examine issues facing young people in their community and to advance meaningful, research-informed change.
