About the owner: Sean Mayo
I began my electrical career in 2006, as an apprentice. I started on the residential side, wiring large homes up and down the front range. Both new construction and remodel, a lot of these homes were smart homes. They featured advanced lighting control systems and automation. This is where I realized how vast the electrical trade was. I enjoyed learning many new skills from simple wiring to programming. During the recession in 2008, I made the switch into the commercial realm. I was hired as the third electrician with a mechanical contractor. I got my first taste of larger commercial jobs. While we mostly supported the mechanical side of the company, we also did small tenant finishes and other projects expected from a small shop.
In 2010, I began working with P&L Electric. I was still an apprentice when I started, working with Journeymen and the owners alike. Soon they started trusting me to work on my own small projects. In 2011, I tested and got my Journeyman's license and then in 2013 I tested again and received my Master's license. With P&L I have had the opportunity to see all different aspects of the electrical trade. From commercial, industrial, agriculture, service, construction, all the way to landscape lighting. Currently still employed full time with P&L, my title is Special Projects. I have the unique job of handling the projects and services that are not a "typical" installation or simply the projects no one else wanted. Working with our apprentices is when I realized that the training material and courses offered weren't conducive to the "Advanced Apprentice". This is where this company and programs come in to play. I enjoy teaching and helping others advance in their career. In molding my company to what it is now, I hope to build strong relationships with electricians, inspectors, contractors, and suppliers across the front range, as well as opening doors to the next generation of quality electricians.
I also joined the fire service in 2005. I started as a volunteer firefighter with Fairmount Fire near Golden, CO. After only a couple years there, I had to resign due to a job I was working on out of state. In 2013, I returned to Fairmount Fire and completed their academy. After my probationary year, I continued to learn and advance my skills. While my department is not an extremely busy department, I soon found my interests drawing me towards our academies. I began to get more and more involved in the training division. I started out as a helper at the academies filling bottles, running errands, cleaning up, and assisting lead instructors. This is where I found my passion for teaching. I always loved learning new things and here I was awarded the chance to pass it on to someone else willing to learn. After a couple years as a helper, I became one of the lead instructors. As the next few years went on, I rose to our academy safety officer and one of the academy coordinators. I am currently still a Volunteer Lieutenant with Fairmount Fire.
While working on obtaining my Fire Instructor I certification, I realized that the information available to firefighters regarding electrical safety and hazards was lacking severely. I started putting together a class for my department regarding electrical safety. After presenting the initial class, I have been invited back multiple times and with other agencies to present. In 2018 I was given the opportunity to attend the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis. I attended some electrical classes there and also thought they weren't entirely up to my standards. When I returned home I submitted my class to FDIC and they have accepted it. This year in 2019, I will be presenting my class at FDIC.
