1. Literature assignments:

Students are asked to record any vocabulary that is unknown to them. We will define the terms in reading groups tomorrow.

The pages in parenthesis indicate that if we have a snow day tomorrow, students are to read to that page.

Wednesday, Jan. 31

1. Vocabulary - study for Friday's test. Units 4 - 6 --- OR ---- Units 1 - 6 (by choice)

2. Full Moon tonight - A blue moon, a super moon, and an eclipse (which occurred at sunrise today). Students are encouraged to bundle up and get outside to view this moon. It will be a beautiful clear night and look for some moon shadows!

2. Math - making "cents" of decimals

4. Literature books - if students are not finished with their book, please spend the 30 minutes of nightly reading time reading their literature book.

3. A Letter to Parents went home today regarding an upcoming unit on forced migration as part of our overall Social Studies theme of the migration of peoples.

1. Tangram puzzle - do lessons 1 & 2 (If it is a snow day tomorrow, do lessons 3 & 4)

2. Literature book - read 20 minutes (If it is a snow day tomorrow, read all you want!)

3. Holiday writing project - complete the first draft of the three paragraph piece. Use the assignment as a guide.

1. Thank you notes to immigration speakers

2. Those who have not finished reading Bridge to America or Letters From Rifka - please use your 30 minutes of reading time to read that book.

3. Develop / review your family's transportation plan for Wednesday's trip to the Tenement Museum in NYC. Please arrive to school by 6:00am for a 6:15 departure. Arrival back at school is expected to be 3:00 - traffic dependent.

The weather forecast is such that the roads are expected to be OK. It will be a cold day, so dress accordingly. This is a walking tour with a lot of outside time!

Students should bring snacks, water, and a non microwaveable lunch. Also, students can bring drawing / writing supplies and / or some games to play with a seat mate (no electronics).

2. Candlehouse group poem - practice, practice, practice! You will not be expected to memorize it, rather it should be read with clarity of expression, with good volume, and smooth pacing. You need to know it well! All students will have the poem in hand at tomorrow's Candlehouse ceremony.

We hope to see as many of you who can make it - 2:15 - 3:00. Also in attendance will be dozen or so residents from Whitney Center!

4. Wonder - The question to students is: Would you recommend a good friend read the book Wonder or see the movie version of Wonder? In class today, we generated reasons for both possibilities. Students are to devise a topic sentence for a paragraph and then circle the ideas from the generated list to include in their paragraph. We will write the actual paragraph tomorrow in school.

3. Written work to be shared - Today, students wrote a paragraph on, Why did you like the book Wonder? They are to share their work with you tonight. Tomorrow we are off to the movies! This has been a powerful book and it will be interesting to see the film adaptation of this story. We will be leaving school by 9:30 for a 10:00 showing of the movie at the North Haven Cinemark. We will return to school by 12:30. We are strictly going to see the film and not stopping at the concession stand...

2. On Friday, Nov 17 we (the fourth grade class) will be going to see the movie Wonder!!! We will take 2 school busses to the North Haven Cinemark to see the 10:00 am showing of the film. We will return to school by 12:30. We are all very excited about seeing the film adaptation of this excellent book.

1. Spelling - Today was a full day and students did not get to taking their spelling pre-test. if you could provide some support by giving the pre-test, that would be appreciated! Students know the process and should come out with a list of ten spelling words for the week. I will checkin with everyone tomorrow morning to look at their list.

2. Thank you note to Mushfiq Mobarak - our first speaker to talk about an immigration experience! It was a interesting to learn about Mushfiq and Anna's experience and their journey to the United States, how important their home culture is to their identity, the role of immigrants here in the United States from an economics point of view, and learning about the process of becoming a United States citizen. Thankyou Mushfiq!

3. Group A to Whitney Center tomorrow. Students prepped a Kindness Rocks activity that they will do tomorrow.

2. St Anne's Thanksgiving food drive - the fourth grade has been asked to bring in boxed stuffing. Please bring in the stuffing anytime before Thanksgiving break.

3. Search for smooth faced rocks, roughly the size of a student's open hand for a project at Whitney Center with our elderly buddies. If it is possible for students to find these rocks = great, but do not go way out out your way to obtain them. I will be on the hunt for these rocks and will be making a trip to the beach and a quarry that will provide many rocks for all.

  • 1:55 Join the Halloween Parade
  • After the parade has concluded, students are released to the care of a parent or parents for the carnival.

Also - UNICEF boxes went home today for you and your family to determine the best course of action.

2. Vocabulary - This week, we are doing a review of the first three units - 36 words. At the close of the day, we outlined a study schedule for the week and it looks like this:

  • Monday - Review Unit 1
  • Tuesday - Review Unit 2 (review challenging words from Unit 1)
  • Wednesday - Review Unit 3 (review challenging words from Unit 1 + 2)
  • Thursday - - Review Units 3, 2, 1 (with an emphasis on Unit 3)
  • Friday - Test. The test will be the same format - definitions & sentences.

3. Group B students to Whitney Center tomorrow. Bring family photographs to share.

I had students record 2 example problems on the back of the sheet which can be referred to tonight. Parent, student, teacher fall conferences

Parent, student, teacher conferences are scheduled for November 2nd and 3rd. In the fourth and fifth grades, students are included in the conference and lead much of it. The objective of having the students involved in these conferences is to promote self advocacy and to encourage students to take a greater responsibility of their learning.

  • Whitney Center - Group A Students make their first visit tomorrow, Tuesday. Students will leave school in the school vans @ 10:40 and return to school by 12:00. Group A students will need to bring in a (or several) photograph(s) of their family, of a family trip, of a pet, etc - pictures that they can use to describe themselves.
  • Photo Day - be prepared for the class and individual pictures!

1. Vocabulary - Study for test tomorrow. The test will be the same format as last week: half of the words to be defined, half of the words to be used in a sentence that clearly shows the meaning of the vocabulary word through context.

2. Math- Prime and composite numbers. In math today, students recorded the definition of these two terms and can refer to them in doing tonight's homework.

3. Share last week's vocabulary test and the Touch Blue final project. These two items need to return to school to be a part of the student's portfolio.

1. Vocabulary - study words for a test on Friday. The test will consist of 1.) writing the definition of words and 2.)writing sentences using the words contextually in a sentence. Students will be given a word bank of the vocabulary words to work from.

2. Spelling - Today, we talked through the weekly spelling routine. Students have a copy of the weekly spelling routine with them and are expected to share that with you tonight.

Tonight, students have been asked to copy the ten words into their Spelling Journal. Please review the words in the spelling journal with your child tonight and correct any misspellings! Thanks for your assistance on this.
