Woman and Sexual Assault

Mission of the project

The mission of the project is to raise awareness on the crisis of woman and sexual assault. I want Fontbonne community members to be educated on this crisis, and be able to help prevent sexual assault from occuring.

My social justice project is solely based on women who face sexual assault in today's society here in the United States. I chose this topic because I have a strong desire to be a part of the organizing that strives to put an end to it. I've been a victim of sexual assault and want to make a change and support the people who cannot speak up, as I did. The sexual assault crisis may be the most tragic injustice in history of humanity.

One in five women have been victims of sexual assault. To put into perspective, in a classroom of twenty girls, four girls have been victims. Throughout the United States, trauma is experienced in woman who suffered from sexual assault. This includes self harm, sexually transmitted infections, substance abuse, dissociation, panic attacks, eating disorders, pregnancy, sleep disorders, suicide, flashbacks, post tramatic stress disorder, and depression. With that being said, up to forty percent of women get transmitted disease from sexual assault. Another reason I strongly believe it may be the most tragic injustice is that women are ten times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than men. Though, men face sexual assault, they are more likely to be the predators.

In court, the victims are registered as witnesses. Though you have to stand in front of the court, you are not automatically given legal representation. Without legal support, you are likely to be aggressively questioned by the opposing team's attorney. When attorneys cross-examine, it can be difficult to understand the question for minors. The legal system needs to focus more on sexual assault cases and showing legal support to the victim.
