Social Teaching
This theme emphasizes that everyone has the right to work, the right to health care and freedom from discrimination, and that society has a responsibility to protect these rights. Pregnant women and mothers face particular pressures in balancing work and family responsibilities. In China, many women chose to delay or avoid pregnancy because having a child would interfere with their work. They have no guarantee that their companies will keep their positions after their maternity leave ends. In the United States, many companies do not give pregnant women adequate maternity leave or flexible work arrangements, resulting in many mothers struggling to balance work and family.
Catholic social teaching advocates for options for the poor and vulnerable, including pregnant women and mothers, especially when they face economic hardship. In many areas, due to poor economic conditions or lack of medical resources, many pregnant women do not receive adequate prenatal care and postnatal recovery support. It is the responsibility of society to provide better health care and social security for these vulnerable women to ensure that they have access to the care and support they deserve and are not neglected due to economic hardship.
