Lack of Access to Resources for Postpartum Mood Disorders

Caroline Hennigan

A lot can happen in 35 days.

This stretch of time is the average waiting period for mothers between the identification of postpartum mental illness symptoms and their referral appointments.  This is largely due to lack of resources, considering the societal stigma surrounding women’s mental health.  Every week of waiting increases odds of symptom worsening by 13% and new suicidal ideation by 9%, a concerning threat to maternal and public health.  Concerning postpartum psychosis specifically, there is approximately a 5% suicide rate and a 4% infanticide rate associated with the illness.

Mission of the project

This presentation has been created to bring light not only to postpartum mental illness, but to the lack of access to care for those struggling and seeking support.  I hope to educate others on what they can do to support mental health and feminism in their local communities
