Mistreatment of Immigrants in Detention Centers

Laura Barron

The treatment of immigrants in detention centers today has evolved from a long history of detention centers. Starting with the creation of these centers, to the start of private prisons, the way detained immigrants are treated today has changed, and not for the better. While racism played into the initial start of detention centers, and is still prominent in these centers today, the main cause that keeps detention centers going is greed. Prison owners make more money by keeping immigrants detained for as long as possible, even if that means they will go weeks without adequate care and basic human needs, such as food, water, and showers.
