Humans Killing the Ocean

The ocean is dying. The cause? Us.

What's Happening to Our Oceans?

My social justice topic is on humans killing the ocean. Within this topic, I will explore the detrimental effects that plastic pollution, underwater noise pollution, ocean acidification, overfishing, and shark finning have had on the ocean and its inhabitants. All of these problems are caused by humans and need to be stopped immediately. The ocean is slowly dying because of us and we need to save it. My project will help to explain what we can do and how we can help to stop the destruction of our underwater world globally because this issue is EVERYWHERE in the world, not just one geographical area.

Why the Ocean?

The ocean and human's effects on it is an important topic to me because the ocean is a giant part of my life. I have grown up two houses away from the ocean and therefore have spent every nice summer day there. It has made me into the woman I am today. The place I work at is due in part to my love for the ocean. I am a lifeguard and would never have become one if I did not care so much about the ocean. I care about taking care of the ocean because it has given me amazing memories and a great childhood. The least I can do to repay it for the irreplaceable memories is protect it from getting further destroyed or at least spread awareness about what we are doing to it.

I love marine life and can’t bear to see it get destroyed by ignorant humans. As a child I would always practice “catch and release” or “take what you need” with my father. It is extremely disappointing to see that so many fishermen are overfishing and taking what they don’t need. I was also taught to throw away my trash properly and recycle instead of just tossing it wherever. I am saddened that so many people decide that the ocean is a great waste bin for them. I was unaware of other issues that the ocean is having due to humans like shark hunting, ocean acidification, and noise pollution but now that I am informed on these issues I want to be able to share them with anyone who will listen and help save the ocean.
