Gentrification is a growing issue that affects low-income communities, displacing long-time residents and altering the cultural and economic fabric of neighborhoods. My social justice project aims to raise awareness about the negative impacts of gentrification, particularly on marginalized communities, by highlighting the struggles of those who are forced out due to rising rent and living costs. Through this website, I will provide research, personal stories, and advocacy resources to help others understand the consequences of gentrification and take action to support housing equity. My goal is to encourage community-driven solutions that prioritize the needs of existing residents while fostering sustainable and inclusive development.
My project’s mission is to raise awareness about gentrification and its impact on low-income communities. I want to educate people on how rising housing costs force longtime residents to leave and provide resources to support fair and inclusive neighborhood growth. My goal is to promote solutions that help communities develop without displacing the people who have lived there for years.
This podcast is a discussion on gentrification and its impact on low-income communities. I will be joined by Officer Jamila Gales, a community police officer who is not from America, bringing a unique perspective on social issues such as poverty and housing insecurity. I am collaborating with Kendell Josephs to create thoughtful questions that explore topics like how poverty affects families, what resources are available, and how we can work toward more inclusive community development. Through this conversation, we hope to raise awareness and encourage action to support fair and affordable housing for all.
The main Catholic Social Teaching that aligns with my project is the option for the poor and vulnerable. This principle emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the needs of those who are most disadvantaged in society. Gentrification often displaces low-income and vulnerable communities, which goes against this teaching. My project aims to raise awareness about how gentrification affects these groups and advocates for solutions that protect their rights to affordable housing and stable communities. Through this, I am working to live out the Catholic value of standing with the marginalized and ensuring their voices are heard.
Hello, my name is Lovensly Victorin, and my social justice project focuses on gentrification in Black communities. Over the years, rising rent and new developments have pushed out many Black families who have lived there for generations. This process not only displaces residents but also erases Black culture and history from the neighborhood. I chose this topic because gentrification disproportionately affects Black communities, making it harder for families to stay in their homes and maintain generational wealth. Through my podcast, I want to highlight these issues, share the voices of those impacted, and explore ways to ensure development happens without displacing Black residents.
