Action/Next Steps

My research thus far has compelled me to take action within my own community, specifically my school community at Fontbonne Academy. The vast majority of fast fashion consumers are women aged 18-24 who have a low income and are often high school or college students. Through my education efforts at Fontbonne, I hope to reach an audience that has participated in the fast fashion industry and cause them to be more conscious of what they are consuming. I have devised an action plan that will serve to educate my peers on the harmful effects of fast fashion, as well as empower them to explore alternatives to the industry itself.

In the upcoming year, I plan to complete my educational website on the issue of fast fashion for my peers. I will present my research through a presentation and the website, with the hope that readers and audience members will learn something new about the industry. I also hope to complete a FunDrive at Fontbonne, where students and families can donate clothing. The clothes will be donated to a local thrift store and the money raised will be donated to the Human Thread to support the advocacy work for the rights of garment workers. My ally, Kayla Jacobs of the Catholic Climate Covenant, has supported me thus far in my research and has referred me to the work of the Greenpeace organization. Ultimately, my main goal of this project is to bring more attention to the social and environmental harm of fast fashion.
