Structured Literacy is the explicit teaching of systematic decoding strategies. Scientific research has demonstrated that this approach is vital to teaching students with dyslexia to read.
Structured Literacy is
systematic- following a sequence that builds from basic to more difficult concepts;
explicit- involves direct teaching of concepts rather than an assumption that exposure to concepts in reading will allow students to deduce them on their own; and
diagnostic- teachers continuously assess and adapt individual instruction to meet students where they are in their learning.
