Annual FMSEA Awards
FMSEA annually recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions towards moving the field of marine science forward, who provide outstanding marine science education and who want to share their successes with other practitioners.

JOHN BEAKLEY “MARINE SCIENCE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR” AWARD
The FMSEA Outstanding Marine Educator Award began in 1986. It was renamed in 1999 in honor of John Beakley, a Marine Science Resource Teacher in Palm Beach County and one of FMSEA’s founders.
Each year, this award is given to an educator who has demonstrated a dedication to, and significant impact on, marine science in Florida. Reviewers will assess nominees based on the following criteria:
Professional experience and background
Special recognition already received related to marine education
Marine science programs and projects developed
Impact on the field or community
Nominees are not required to be members of FMSEA, however member nominations are encouraged. Self-nominations are also encouraged.

FMSEA OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD
The FMSEA Community Partner Award was established to recognize the importance of engaging students in real-time marine science and ocean conservation solutions to enhance their academic learning, build career readiness, and/or instill lifelong ocean stewardship.
This Award is given to a business or organization that has demonstrated dedication to engaging students and/or teachers in marine science and conservation outside of the classroom OR has been instrumental in the integration of marine science and conservation into classroom curricula. Nominations should address the following categories:
Scope of impact on teachers and/or students, including number of individuals impacted each year
Detailed description of educational service, including: demonstration of needs met by the service, method of support (financial or in-kind), and description of learning activities if applicable.
Evaluation method(s) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of success
Relevant state, national or global standard-alignments supported, if applicable
Other relevant contributions to the advancement of marine science education and ocean conservation in Florida.

FMSEA JUSTICE, EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION ADVANCEMENT AWARD
The FMSEA Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) Advancement Award was established to recognize educators with a significant focus on connecting individuals from under-represented and/or underserved groups in marine science to learning, career and/or scholarship opportunities through marine science and ocean conservation education.
This Award is given to an educator that has demonstrated dedication to delivering equitable marine science and ocean conservation education in their classroom, school and/or community. DEI Advancement Award recipients are acutely aware of systemic, socio-economic, situational and dispositional barriers to learning and have had significant positive impact on one or more marginalized groups in the context of marine science and ocean conservation education. Self-nominations are accepted. Nominations should address the following categories:
Scope of impact on students or community members belonging to historically under-represented and/or underserved groups in marine science, including number of individuals impacted each year
Detailed description of equitable educational efforts, including: demonstration of needs met by the service, description of individuals served, method of amplifying marginalized voices, and description of learning activities if applicable.
Evaluation method(s) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of success
Relevant state, national or global standard-alignments supported, if applicable
Other relevant contributions to the advancement of equitable marine science education and ocean conservation in Florida.

FMSEA SERVICE AWARD
The FMSEA Service Award began in 1993 and is given each year to a member who has exhibited dedicated service to the organization. Nominees must be FMSEA members. Self-nominations are accepted. The nomination must address the following points:
Professional experience and background
Projects/programs related to FMSEA undertaken by nominee
Number of years and in what capacities nominee has served in FMSEA

Grant Opportunities
FMSEA DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION MINI-GRANT
Following in the footsteps of our parent organization, NMEA, we are committed to increasing diversity in the field of marine science education by providing educators with tools to offer opportunities for EVERY student and educator interested in marine science. FMSEA will award a $500 grant and a complimentary FMSEA conference registration to a Florida marine science educator creating marine science educational programming that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion by meeting the needs of underserved and underrepresented audiences. These audiences may include but not be limited to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities and individuals with disabilities or the groups that provide support services.
Recipients do not need to be present at the conference to accept and will be contacted via the email provided. The recipient will receive one complimentary conference registration for the following year, FMSEA membership and a one night stay at the conference hotel. Recipients will be required to check-in with detailed program updates 6 months after receiving the grant and are required to present on the grant funded program during the next annual conference.

Scholarship Opportunities
FMSEA TEACHER TRUST FUND AWARD – INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARSHIP
The FMSEA Board of Directors voted to establish an environmental education trust fund at its October 10, 1993 meeting. The fund is in support of staff development which includes teacher in-service training and enhancement. A special thank you goes to R. Duncan Matthewson for his efforts in helping to establish this fund.
Individual Scholarships will be presented to FMSEA members to attend either an environmental professional development program or a professional conference (including the FMSEA annual conference). Awards may cover registration, travel or accommodation costs. Applicants are encouraged to secure matching funds from sources other than FMSEA. All award winners must agree to:
acknowledgments of FMSEA support in all activities related to the funded program,
file copies with FMSEA of all products/projects generated by the program,
a short, written report on the program/conference for the annual FMSEA Journal or present a session at the first FMSEA Annual Conference after the completion of the project.

NMEA Awards
FMSEA is a regional chapter of the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), an organization that brings together those interested in the study and enjoyment of the world of water, both fresh and salt. We encourage our outstanding FMSEA members to submit nominations to NMEA.
JOHNETTE D. BOSARGE MEMORIAL AWARD
The National Marine Educators Association is proud to offer this award in loving memory of Johnette D. Bosarge, who served as the NMEA administrative assistant from 1999-2013. This is an annual, monetary award to be used as the recipient deems appropriate for attending the annual NMEA Conference and/or in the recipient’s formal or informal facility for educational purposes. A sea star sculpture containing the recipient’s name will also be presented during the Awards Ceremony at the annual NMEA Conference. This award is not based on financial need.
