Some of the trickiest skills for young students to master are things we do every day at our computers without much thought: clicking, dragging, and double-clicking!

The student will: K.CS.2.1 Use appropriate terminology in naming and identifying hardware (e.g., monitor, keyboard, mouse, earbuds, headphones, printer). K.CS.2.2 Learn to handle computing devices with proper care (e.g., do not place food or drink near a computer or tablet; hold tablets or laptops with both hands when transporting them).

When teaching students how to hold the mouse, I ask them to hold up their first two fingers to make a V (with their right hand). As they're holding the mouse, have them watch the pointer on the screen. As they practice moving the mouse, they'll learn that their movements control the pointer on the screen. This is going to be unusual for kids who are used to touch-screen devices.

In kindergarten, we will only work on left-clicking. They won't be right-clicking, but it is a good idea to get them used to placing their hand correctly on the mouse.
Left-handed students almost always end up using the mouse with their right hands. (That allows them to use any computer without having to go to settings and change the mouse to left-handed.)

This is a challenge for a lot of young kids. They have to be able to hold down the left mouse button while moving the mouse. Often their hands accidentally move and press the right button or move the scroll wheel. It takes a little time, but with practice they will become pros!
