This accommodation allows the student or teacher to highlight important information in their notes or on their test.
Using a highlighter to note important words in a passage or instructions.
Using a calculator for familiar math problems to reduce errors and demonstrate understanding of concepts

"Let's highlight all the verbs in the sentence."
"Let's highlight the words you need to find in the dictionary."
"I need to remember this word."
"This is a vocabulary word, so I will highlight it."
"I can't figure out what this word means."
Teacher will provide highlighter and guide the students on what to highlight.
Teacher can highlight important words in the instructions or assessment.
Students will highlight important or unkown words in the reading task.
The Use of Instructional Tools accommodation should be removed once an ML demonstrates they can process academic vocabulary with more proficiency. Most MLs do not require Use of Instructional Tools beyond the Developing level (3), but some students occasionally require this accommodation through the Expanding level (4). If you have questions, or feel your ML requires a change in their ILAP regarding this accommodation, please reach out to the ESOL teacher in your building to discuss the student's needs.
