Entering (1) through Expanding (4)
Small Group Instruction usually takes place to preview, reinforce or to reteach specific skills and concepts by providing a reduced student-teacher ratio. Small groups typically range in size from four to six students and allow the teacher to re-teach or reinforce skills that some students need to master grade-level content.
Small Group Assessment is used when students require an accommodated testing environment, including oral adminstration .
Some examples for using Small Group Instruction include:
Introducing vocabulary
Building background knowledge
Strategy groups in writing to work on a specific writing goal
Teacher-led experiments in science
Assessments given in the classroom with or without oral administration
Some examples for using Small Group Assessment include:
oral administration
extended time
quiet, undistracted space
“I’d love to hear you read to me. Can you join me at the small group table?”
“Please discuss this problem with your small group and come up with a plan before sharing your solution with the whole class.”
"Let's take this test in a quieter space."
"Can I work with you in a small group, please?"
“I can’t come up with a possible solution. I think I need help.”
"I need a quiet place to think for this test."
Teacher groups students according to their language, academic and/or social emotional needs.
Teacher discreetly sends student to testing center for assessment, or works with students requiring small group assessment at the back of the room.
Student comes to small group with materials provided by the teacher and expected to participate.
Students are able to listen to the questions read to them, and focus on the assessment without unecessary distractions.
The Small Group accommodation should be removed gradually once an ML demonstrates increased literacy and auditory comprehension, increased confidence with academic language, and increased independence in task completion. Most MLs do not require Small Group instruction or assessment beyond the Developing level (3), but some students occasionally require this accommodation through the Expanding level (4). If you have questions, or feel your ML requires a change in their ILAP regarding this accommodation, please reach out to the ESOL teacher in your building to discuss the student's needs.
