Reading, Writing
Entering (1) through Developing (3)
Pre-teaching vocabulary is important in helping students understand new material and to enhance reading comprehension. By pre-teaching vocabulary, students will recognize words and use them in context.
"What do you know about this word? "
"What is a visual you could create to represent this word?"
"I recognize ________ in this word."
"I know this word means________ so it could mean____________."
"A visual I could create would be ______________."
Teacher prepares a document with key vocabulary, definition, and a visual example to prepare for in class discussion. The teacher discusses each word, making visual connections and encouraging students to turn and talk about each new term.
Teacher prepares quizlet with vocabulary term and marching picture.
Students review new vocabulary to prepare for new content and discuss in class what they might already know about each vocabulary word using background knowledge.
The Pre-Teach Vocabulary and Key Content accommodation may be removed when the student can read text in class and comprehend vocabulary with the same ease as most of their peers and its meaning without explicit teacher instruction. Most MLs do not require pre-teaching of vocabulary and key content beyond the Developing level (3), but some students occasionally require this accommodation through the Expanding level (4). If you have questions, or feel your ML requires a change in their ILAP regarding this accommodation, please reach out to the ESOL teacher in your building to discuss the student's needs.
