Frequently Asked Questions
Students whose parents are Canadian citizens and whose first language is English and all early learning students born in Canada can register at their neighbourhood school. For more information about registration for Canadian citizens, click here.
Non-Canadian students (or children of non-Canadian parents) need to register with Student Identification Documents so their immigration documents can be reviewed to determine eligibility for publicly funded education in Alberta.
Students in grades 1 to 12 who are new to Fort McMurray Public Schools and whose first language is not English also register online.
Students can register for school once the family has found a place to live and can provide a document with the home address.
Examples of documents with a home address are:
Signed mortgage, rental or lease agreement
Albertan driver’s license
Utility bill (e.g., water, gas, energy, cable TV).
Families are encouraged to register their children in the school that is closest to their home. All schools follow the curriculum set by the Alberta Ministry of Education. For more information about the curriculum, please refer to the Ministry's website.
Elementary school students typically attend the neighbourhood school in their attendance area. To find your neighbourhood school, click on our Enrollment Boundaries.
High schools have open attendance boundaries, which means students can attend the school of their choice, regardless of where they reside in the city.
Students in ECDP to Grade 12 are placed in a grade that matches their age. Students may receive credit for classes completed outside of Canada, so their grade level will be determined at the school.
There is no deadline to register for school. Fort McMurray Public Schools offers open registration throughout the school year.
Early Childhood Development Program (ECDP) is based on space availability if trying to register between October and June of the current school year.
Your child's English-language skills will be assessed at the time of registration. Extra language support may be provided, if necessary, by staff at the school.
Children eligible for ECDP must turn 3 before December 31st, 2023.
Please inform your current school of your move and register at the new school. The school staff will initiate your child’s transfer process to the other school.
For your child to be eligible for study:
The child's parent/legal guardian must have a valid work permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that is valid for a term of one year or more AND
The work permit must be valid for Alberta AND
The child's parent/legal guardian must live in Alberta with the child for the duration of study.
Professional Learning Fridays (PLF) are dedicated sessions designed to foster continuous growth and development among FMPSD staff. The goal of a PLF is to create a structured space where individuals can enhance their skills, stay updated on trends, and collaborate with peers in a productive environment. Students do not attend school during PLFs; the schedule for PLFs is released prior to the start of a new school year.
