Beloved Community Bible Study
& Book Discussion
An in-depth look at the social, economic, and political forces that shaped Jesus' ministry.Â
Overview: Classes will include discussion, teaching, and opportunities to foster deeper relationships between people from different congregations, racial, economic, political, and other backgrounds. Our starting point is Obery Hendricks' The Politics of Jesus, which argues for a revolutionary Jesus who challenges the politics of the status quo in every age.
Discussion is hosted by Bethel AME Church (401 E Park St, Champaign, IL) and First Mennonite Church (902 W Springfield Ave, Urbana, IL). Sessions are led by Rev. Terrance L. Thomas (Bethel) and Rev. Michael B. Crosby (First Mennonite). This is a public, ecumenical Christian book discussion. People of all faiths are welcome. The focus is on how those committed to following Jesus can bring our lives into alignment with his example and teaching.
Participants are strongly encouraged to keep up with the readings and attend often. However, we know that life is busy. Come as often as you are able. You will want your own copy of the book, The Politics of Jesus: Rediscovering the True Revolutionary Nature of Jesus' Teachings and How They Have Been Corrupted, by Obery Hendricks.
Study Materials: The first study aid is Obery Hendricks, The Politics of Jesus: Rediscovering the True Revolutionary Teachings of Jesus and How They Have Been Corrupted. Participants are encouraged to purchase the book and read along.
