About
The masterclasses form the core of the residency, offering close and focused engagement between artist and participants. Designed for advanced learners to pre-professional students (approximately ABRSM Grade 6 level and above, or equivalent), the sessions explore interpretation, musical decision-making, and the relationship between technique and expression in a setting that values attentiveness, clarity, and thoughtful dialogue.
Private Masterclass
Private masterclasses are conducted in an intimate studio setting without an observing audience, allowing for concentrated and detailed work. Selected advanced participants engage closely with the artist in focused exploration of repertoire, interpretation, and technical refinement.
Open Masterclass
Open masterclasses combine active participation with attentive observation. Selected students work publicly with the artist, while a limited audience listens as part of the learning process. Younger learners are encouraged to attend as listeners. Observation is an essential component of musical development.
Selection Process
Applicants must submit one piece or movement (4–10 minutes).
Audition is conducted virtually via recorded video submission.

Selection will be jointly conducted by Paul Edmund-Davies and Koh Yew Kia, Artistic Advisor of Flute Encounters.
Successful applicants will be notified and invited to confirm participation and complete payment within a specified timeframe.
A professional piano accompanist will be provided for all masterclass sessions.
Participants are welcome to perform with their own accompanists if preferred, subject to scheduling considerations.
The decision of the selection panel is final.
