What is Accelerated Reader (AR):
AR is a program designed to encourage students to read. AR exposes students to children’s literature ranging from classics to contemporary authors. This strengthens their comprehension skills and exposes them to a large variety of books.
AR helps track students' independent reading practice. AR tests student comprehension of books they have read using an online computer program.
Most books in our library have an AR test available. Those books are marked to show they have a test. Students choose books at their reading level and take quizzes after finishing them.
AR tests can only be taken at school. If students read a book from home, please send a note with the title and author in case your child needs help finding the test.
Points are awarded based on difficulty and quiz score.
This data is used to monitor progress and set goals.
How Parents Can Be Involved:
Stay Informed: Regularly talk to your child's teacher about their reading ability and how you can support their growth at home.
Track Progress: Using AR Home Connect, parents can view student progress online. Each student will be given a Home Connect login at the beginning of the school year. Once in Home Connect, parents can also click Email Setup to receive emails showing students’ quizzes or test results.
Support at Home: Encourage reading at home and help your child find books at their reading level.
Discuss Books: Talk about what your child is reading. Ask questions about the characters, plot, and what they learned.
Make it Fun: Set reading goals together, celebrate achievements, and create a positive reading environment at home.
